A press release is an official document for the press/media about a specific and significant news about a company. It can be hiring a new manager, a merger, a takeover of another company, launch of a new product, etc.
Press release is also quite beneficial as it attracts a lot of traffic because of the nature of its writing as it is meant to break a new information.

Press releases is used to give the useful information about your website to the users and it is one of the link building technique used in SEO to get backlinks

Press release is best method for link building, we have get more visitors from that one. but we have to release about original content otherwise it be consider Spam..

It must be hard to be taken seriously with a press release unless you are a journalist working for a site that also has an off-line publication IMO.

Exactly. Excluding the real newswires, virtually all press releases are not newsworthy at all and are obviously just there for the links. Most 'press release' sites don't do any distribution, so are effectively just selling links..! Google knows that, and if I was Google I wouldn't put much value in them.

Press release is link building technique. Writing the press release and distributing the release. There are very few press release submission sites free with anchor text.

Press release is to notify everyone about the new happenings in an organization as it must come into the knowledge of everyone. In SEO, Press release submission has a great significance as businesses promote their hot offers through press release. It has been an effective way to build quality backlinks as well.

Press release is a link building technique, that is used to promote news or information about a company or its products and services to the media and to everyone using the net. It gives exposure to your site if its new, and can generate traffic for your site if the content of the press release is good and interesting.
