Simply put, it's where you attempt to market something that others will duplicate to create leverage of your initial marketing efforts.

The simplest example is maybe a blog theme with a link back to the author's web site in the footer. If the theme is very popular such as the Cut Line theme for WordPress, lot's of people will use it and recommend it to others so you get a viral link-building effect.

Another example is a video on YouTube such as the dancing baby that might get a viral explosion of views as word spreads about it.

Viral content spreads like virus, in an ever expanding loop which may never end. For an online marketer, spreading content endlessly from person to person represents a superior strategy to promote content at a fraction of the effort and costs required by traditional marketing techniques.

Viral marketing is a technique that uses word of mouth or email to reach and affect an audience.

The goal of a viral marketer is to create "buzz" about a product product  or idea, so that the idea spreads widely. If effective, viral marketing may require very little effort on the part of the propagandist, as the recipients of the message become the primary agents who spread it to other people. On the other hand, the weakest thing about this form of marketing is that it is hard to control. Like the "telephone game" that children play, the message may change as it passes from ear to ear.

Viral marketing is done to make the product a part of life. It is done through offline and online methods. They use social media, video marketing, search engine marketing and classified ads to promote the products for example, Facebook. Facebook is just like any other social networking site but it is famous and used by everyone due to viral marketing.
