Some Comparisons and Similarities of SEO and SEM:

Link Building:
SEO – Inbound links are a large determining factor in rankings.
SEM – Links are a result of success, which means that SEO benefits from good SEM.

On Page Elements:
SEO – Title tags, headers, image title, bold text and use of keywords are all influential on search engine rankings.
SEM – Coding and tags are not so important, while visual attention grabbers make a bigger impact.

Titles:
SEO – The title tag of a page tells the search engines what a page is about and carries a lot of weight in the rankings.
SEM – Titles and headlines are extremely important for grabbing attention and getting users to click-through.

Content:
SEO – Quality content is important in order to rank well.
SEM – Quality content is important in order to hold the readers’ attention and win their approval.

Analysis:
SEO – Analysis is necessary in order to know which changes have made an impact (positive or negative) on the site’s rankings.
SEM – Analysis is necessary to know what types of content draws interest.

Predictability / the Benefit of Experience:
SEO – Experts are able to reproduce success with new sites (although it’s not as easy as it sounds), as the same elements can be applied.
SEM – Those who know the social media audience can recreate success by publishing posts and headlines specifically for this purpose.

Success Breeds More Success:
SEO – Trusted domains will have a positive effect on all pages, including new pages.
SEM – Power profiles on sites like Digg can keep traffic flowing with new submissions.

I believe that SEM is the best way for new websites and blogs to draw visitors. This early success with social media can have long-lasting effects on search engine rankings as well.

By most people's standards, the internet is still very young. New technologies and developments in existing technologies are appearing at an extraordinary rate. As technologies change, so does the terminology used to describe them.

I worked for three years as a webmaster. Ask a dozen people to define that term, and you'll get a lot of different answers. A webmaster may be the leader of a large team, including developers, writers, marketers, designers, usability experts, technical support people, and yes, search engine optimizers. Or s/he may perform all or some of those duties alone.

The same is true for search engine optimization. For many people, the term is a new one, and they have no idea what it is an SEO does. To others, SEO is synonymous with SEM -- search engine marketing. In my opinion, there is a big difference between the two.

welL.........! i think SEO and SEM are the two common terms used by the webmasters. Sometimes it seems like there two terms are used almost interchangeably, but that is not, there is a big difference in their meanings and techniques. SEO which refers to anything you do on your website to make it more users as well as friendly. Whereas SEM stands for search engine marketing, it works as an umbrella which refers to anything you do to get your page ranked high on the search engine from SEO services to requesting back links to URL submissions at engines
hope this will help you........!

SEO stands for search engine optimization. It involves techniques for optimizing your website to attain higher ranks in search engine results and have greater visibility for your site. They involve on-page and off-page SEO techniques.

SEM is search engine marketing. It mainly comprises of Pay-per-click campaigns where you pay Google to display your ad on search engine result pages.

Search Engine Marketing is considered as a part of Search Engine Optimization. Search Engine Marketing comes in off-page optimization of a website. However on-page optimization is done on a website. Search Engine Marketing is about marketing the products and services for search engines to increase the link popularity.

SEO, Search Engine Optimization, has the main purpose to promote sites on the TOP10 of SERP (search engines result page) to attract visitors for the its keywords. SEM, Search Engine Optimization, has the same purpose but adding the use of advertisement like PPC (Pay Per Click). PPC is usually more expansive than SEO, but if your site is not in TOP10 this is the only alternative to find customers and in the meanwhile you should organize the SEO of your site so to save money in the future.

SEO is about building link and increasing your website visibility in search engines by implementing various techniques.
Contrary to it SEM is related with earning money via of marketing. Google adsense, PPC ,affiliate marketing all lies in the category of SEM
