It won't help in ranking much. Submit to as many as you like. You can find them here - www.addurl.nu

DMOZ.org used to be the #1 directory to get listed in, I would submit there as a first port of call.

Submit to as many as you can, with a preference for directories which belong to your niche.

Start with the higher PR directories, and then go down..

A diverse range of natural links is better IMO such as from articles, YouTube, blog comments, friend's sites, code widgets and forums. Anything you can think of basically to get some traffic to your site.

Try to stay away from directories and look for link baiting techniques

every single back link from a directory already helps your website.. so, nothing is wrong with submitting to bunch of directories

What do you mean by that?

There may be nothing wrong with submitting to many directories, but is it worth the time? I think there are better methods of advertising than directory submissions, and they require the same amount of investment.

In addition, many "free" directories will turn down sites without reciprocal links-- even the ones that claim that reciprocal links are optional. Last year I submitted to 60+ directories, and less than half listed my website.

If the category page that you wish to be listed in is not indexed in Google or other search engines, then the page has no power to improve your site's link popularity. Because Google does not know about it, it cannot recognize that it is linking to you.
