Guys, I am trying to set up a USB drive containing ubuntu.

My computer runs ubuntu 8.1 fine from the live CD but I am having trouble making a bootable USB drive. I have a USB dongle that boots but gets locked up in a loop trying to access the floppy drive.

I used the ubuntu admin tool to install it on the USB drive but then had to make it bootable using a utility, otherwise it was not seen by my bios as a drive.

On the USD drive there is an autorun.inf file containing:

[autorun]
open=umenu.exe
icon=umenu.exe

Maybe I should erase all the files and run the ubuntu USB setup utility again now the drive is bootable?

Any ideas?

Update:

I ran the command: lilo -M /dev/sdd
This repaired the Master Boot Record (MBR) so now it boots ok.

p.s. I just discovered portable linux which seems like the ideal solution.

Andy the only way I have been able to do that is dual booting with GRUB on my MBR. I read all the time about people trying to boot only from a USB  drive without dual booting and having problems.

As long as your bios allows you to set a USB drive as a hard disk, it should not be a problem. Then the USB drive needs to be given priority as a boot disk over the internal hard disk. Also, the USB drive must have it's boot flag set. You may be able to do this with the fdisk command.

btw I tried the portable linux install and I couldn't get grub to recognize the ubuntu ISO. Something wrong with the menu list entries I guess?
