I operate an online store. When we update customers orders an email goes to the customer confirming the different stages. Yahoo mail account holders do not seem to be receiving these mails.

What could be causing this?

Your messages are being filtered as spam. Yahoo seems to have a pretty strict spam filter... place a note on your confirmation pages stating the problem-- tell all customers with Yahoo accounts to check their spam folder or add your domain to the accepted e-mails list.

If you are using a dedicated server, you may also want to make sure that reverse DNS is set on your IP address.  Most email services will reject new messages or mark them as spam if they cannot resolve your IP to a hostname.

What I found was that Yahoo! blocks emails from the same IP based on the frequency of sending them to Yahoo! customers, so schedule your delivery to be very slow to Yahoo! mail boxes (how slow, I don't know, maybe 1 per 10 minutes???). They lift the block dynamically, so it is not permanent.

Another thing I just thought of was blacklists.  If you are using a shared hosting provider, then it may very well be possible that the IP your sharing with other clients is on a list of frequent spammers.  Many email providers use IP blacklists to help prevent spam from reaching their members.  If the IP you are using is on a blacklist, a simple solution may be to request a new "dedicated" IP.  Having a dedicated IP will mean that you are the only one using it and you wont have to worry about other hosting customers getting the IP blacklisted.  Having a dedicated IP is also required if you plan on offering SSL on your site if you do not have it already.  http://www.spamhaus.org/ is an example of one of the very well known blacklists out there.

It is better to have an email address listed with your site ex: sales@yourwebsite.com.  This should fix the problem

Any time you place your email address on your site you should obfuscate (hide it from spam bots) it this is easy to do as there are many online services that do that but I like the free program OELC (Obfuscated Email Link Creator) which is a free download from
http://bestwebstop.webcentr.net/programs3.php
it works with all versions of Windows and Linux through wine.

The yahoo filters the messages as spam.
It should be best to create an e-mail address on your site.

Since I have many sites and domain names, I prefer to funnel all the email through one gmail account. Also, this helps with spam filtering so you don't see many of the spams that are sent. This works since gmail uses a voting system to mark emails as spam. You don't get this advantage of community spam filtering by using your own site email box.
