In Cpanel you can enable spam assassin. Then in your Cpanel you can get a drop-down menu under mail -> Filters that allows you to discard any email flagged as spam that has been tagged as spam by spam assassin. I have been testing it out over the past 2 weeks and I think it is working well. Since spam that faked my email was being trapped and legit email was making it through the filter.

This can save you a lot of time having to view and manually delete spam. With this method you don't get to see obvious spam at all.

Some online tutorials tell you to tag spam and redirect it to a spam folder. But this wastes your time since you have a spam email box that fills up and you have to log in and empty it.

Are you using a secondary spam filter (client-side)? I use mailwasher and with a few tweaks, it works very well. I agree the spam folder is a time waister.

If you are using one of the webmaster’s tools or something that the webmasters can access to, spam assassin in cpanel is one of the best spam filters that are available out there. But, to me, all of the spam filter looks the same, as they have the same function; obviously it is the only function it has, that is to filter spam. It is just a matter of whether it can efficiently filter out spam, or otherwise.

most spam filters, are based in bayesian filtering. It's about probabilities. Bayesian Filtering  is a statistical technique of e-mail filtering. It makes use of a naive Bayes classifier to identify spam e-mail.

Bayesian classifiers work by correlating the use of tokens (typically words, or sometimes other things), with spam and non spam e-mails and then using Bayesian statistics to calculate a probability that an email is or is not spam.

Bayesian email filters take advantage of Bayes' theorem. Bayes' theorem is used several times in the context of spam:

    * a first time, to compute the probability that the message is spam, knowing that a given word appears in this message;
    * a second time, to compute the probability that the message is spam, taking into consideration all of its words (or a relevant subset of them);
    * sometimes a third time, to deal with rare words.

The advantage of Bayesian spam filtering is that it can be trained on a per-user basis.

Quote
SpamAssassin 2.50 and later supports Bayesian spam analysis, in the
        form of the BAYES rules. This is a new feature, quite powerful, and is
        disabled until enough messages have been learnt.

Also Gmail uses bayesian filtering, and other techniques they have. But bayesian is the basis for spam filtering.

Email filtering is the processing of e-mail to organize it according to specified criteria. Most often this refers to the automatic processing of incoming messages, but the term also applies to the intervention of human intelligence in addition to anti-spam techniques, and to outgoing emails as well as those being received.

A spam filter is a program that is used to detect unsolicited and unwanted email and prevent those messages from getting to a user's inbox. Like other types of filtering programs, a spam filter looks for certain criteria on which it bases judgments.
