I am planning to code a client-side game Application and was going to use Adobe Flex if I can get the IDE to work on my computer  Undecided Another alternative may be Java.

Any thoughts on which method would be best for an experienced programmer but newbie to Adobe stuff or Java?

I found that the problem with running the Flex 3 IDE with Windows XP can be resolved by disabling the external USB disk driver in the control panel, so I guess the Adobe code has a bug where it is checking drives that don't exist?

After doing this I was able to run the IDE and write and run code.

If anyone wants to create some kind of interactive application to run client-side on the web, I have to say that this is a relatively easy way to do it. One snag is that it is hard to get to relevant examples and learning material online for Flex 3 since there is so much older stuff out there related to Flash and Action script.

If anyone is stuck on some basics I may be able to help now.

I think the starting point link is: http://www.adobe.com/products/flex/

Remember that you are searching for flex 3 with the SDK you can produce web applications for free, but you may want to pay $249 for the IDE to make life easier and try the professional version demo for 60 days. My plan is to use the IDE to make the text-based files for my game in the demo period and later tweak the code in a text editor.

For online help you want stuff related to the mx libraries. ActionScript is the code that drives the interactivity and the Flex part adds the easy way to visually develop your user interface.

p.s. I found that ActionScript is similar to C programming. Also, the components you use for the visual stuff like buttons are similar to Microsoft components. Basically you describe a visual display area in XML with it's fixed areas on the canvas and have a code section that contains ActionScript to do the dynamic stuff.

Very very oversimplified I know but I hope to provide a link to my first online application soon   Smiley
