Hi,

I'm looking to buy a new wireless router because my Netgear WGR614v6 has a blind spot in my house and i don't want to change the location of the router, so thought my best bet was to buy a new Wireless "N" router.

I know i could only buy draft N at the moment, but would like some help choosing which router to buy ?

BTW i'm on Virgin cable broadband and would need a router that works with my cable company. Oh and something with a better range than the router i've already got. Has anyone got any suggestions ?

Oh, just a thought... What's wimax ?

Graham, have you checked DLink one of my friends using wireless router(don't remember model) and really pleased with it's performance.
I never used one myself so I'm a bad adviser Tongue If you wish I may ask about model and working range.

Funny you should say that because i was looking at a D-Link DIR-615 on Ebay. I was also watching a Netgear RangeMax WPN824 MIMO 802.11 Pre-N Wireless Router.

The Netgear i have now is very good at it's job, it doesn't drop connection that often and works well down stairs. It's my back bedroom that has problems with the range and the walls in the house that the wireless has to go through.

I have had two other routers before this one. I had an old Lynksys wired router that was fantastic but wasn't wireless and i had a Lynksys wireless router that dropped connection every half hour and wasn't fast enough.

BTW i'd post you this Netgear router once i get a new one if i thought it would e any good to you. I think the power supply might be a problem though and the fact that it works with a cable modem.

Oh and i did look at those electrical plug in things that send wireless through the house wiring, but they cost as much as a new router.

Have you thought about the Mac wireless router? I use it and love it, great speed and coverage. I haveused linksys, netgear and D-Link, but my #1 spot goes for the Mac.

Have you thought about the Mac wireless router?

Are you talking about Airport Extreme ? I think it does have a 10/100 WAN ethernet port, so should be ok. I think i might be buying one of these though instead. D-Link DIR-655 Wireless N Gigabit Firewall Router. It's got very good reviews and is cheaper than the Mac router.

I should have known that, but for some reason didn't. Thanks. It's something like wifi maximised.

I've just made my mind up and after looking at a few reviews, i've ordered the D-Link DIR-655 from Amazon for £75.60

Here's what it said in one review : -
Quote
Pros
• Gigabit WAN and LAN with excellent routing speed
• Most simultaneous sessions of any router tested
• Automatic QoS for Internet uplink and WLAN
• Tries not to stomp on neighboring WLANs
Cons
• 2.4 GHz band only
• Wireless throughput tends to vary widely over time
• Does not statically fall back to 20 MHz channel for 11b/g neighbors
It sound much better than what i already have anyway.

Sorry I've missed this thread somehow, was just checking notifications in my e-mail and spot that it got response.

I would definitely go with D-Link since I own ADSL modem of this brand and trust it. They seems to have competitive pricing and good quality and are very popular here.

I had bluetooth dongle by Linksys which works very well and so far have longest working range from everything I've tried.
But I've tried ADSL modem from them(can't remember model but have it somwhere) and it wasn't impressive, also had problems with hanging.

Thanks, if you don't need it, it would be handy. As actually I was considering to buy a router few months ago to reorganize my home network but never did it.

I've heard a lot about it but never seen where this technology is implemented, and not sure if our wiring could be used for this.

congratulations with your new router, it's a bit expensive for me but it should be good investment. Please let us know how it performs.

It seems to me that the cost of wireless routers in the UK is very high. I bought a local brand one a couple of years back in Japan that has worked well for little cost.

You can also share an internet connection with an ad-hoc wireless connection from a laptop if you can figure out how to set it up.

I got home from work last night and a box was waiting for me. It was my new D-Link DIR-655 wireless N router. Anyway i took it out of the box, ran the set-up disk and found out that the easy set up stopped half way through. It couldn't find my cable modem. So all i did was to remove the disk from my laptop and did a manual set-up. It took about 15 mins and i was done. I've now got more wireless range and a better wireless signal.

I don't like the blue LED lights on the router, but it's fast and i'd recommend this router to anyone with cable.
