Hi,

Does Google ignore trademark symbols? Suppose you have a page with the following keyword on the page:

BRAND™ modifier

Will Google ignore the trademark character when some searches for BRAND modifier, i.e. the keyword without the tm symbol?

Interesting question!

My thinking is that big G may give you a plus point for recognising trademarks but they seem to recognise that most web publishers are ignorant of the legal requirements so they don't penalise you if you do not add this. In any case, this would only apply to major corporations where their trademarks are given special attention.

For instance, you must display the GOOGLE trademarked word like I just did or in other ways as they explain in their legal documents, but how many sites do this and they don't have any negative effect?

Hi Andy,

My concern is that noone searchs for BRANDtm since the tm symbol isn't available on the keyboard.

And does google ignore the tm or read it as the keyword and then some obscure character? Some say add a space so at least the latter shouldn;t be a probelm but i would like to see the tm lost altogether if the brand owners will allow.

I am sure that you will have no problem ignoring the TM as regards search queries. In fact, most sites ignore this. The search results are based on what the majority of people search for. So you don't have to worry much about this issue.

If you are worried then you could maybe talk about it in your disclosure page. There you can explain why you omitted this element from your site. Then you should be covered as regards a human review of your site.

Adding a TM to your brand in the content or in your site title will just help make sure that you have no.1 rankings for your brand as keyword. However, I will always avoid that in title and body content, it just doesn't look nice IMO. I may use it in disclaimer, footer stuff etc.

Its not our brand but the brand owners stipulate that the brandname be displayed with the tm symbol.

Whether thats just at least once on the page i'm not sure but i will investigate saince the general consensus seems to be lose the tm.

I certainly thinks it looks ugly especially when repeated thoughout the page.

Hi,

Just thought i'd post my solution...

Rather than worry about finding/modifying/updating the first instance of the product name on each page i just placed some additional navigation at the top of every page with links to the product pages i.e.

<body>
<a href="#">PRODUCT1</a>tm | <a href="#">PRODUCT2</a>tm | <a href="#">PRODUCT3</a>tm | <a href="#">ETC</a>tm

This also helped with accessibility. I removed the <abbr> tag from the first instance of an abbreviation on each page and just used it on the top level navigation.

<a href="#"><abbr title="blah">PRODUCT1</abbr></a>tm | <a href="#"><abbr title="blah">PRODUCT2</abbr></a>tm | <a href="#"><abbr title="blah">PRODUCT3</abbr></a>tm | <a href="#"><abbr title="blah">ETC</abbr></a>tm

Voila - 2 birds with one stone.
