Maybe the width issue of alt text has something to do with how it makes the layout of page text look like in web browsers for the blind or partially sighted where the images may be turned off? But that's a long shot. I would recommend that you do an image search on your keywords and see how the top ranking image's host sites implement the text if you are optimizing to this degree.

I would have thought that anchored text links to the image from other sites would have a major impact. For example a big image of a big truck with alt text of "big truck" and a file name of big-truck.jpg and anchored links such as check out this <a href="big-truck.com/big-truck.jpg">Big Truck</a> at big truck.com Just incase the search engine can't work out what the image is about  Grin
