Thought you might want to have a read of this about Windows 7 : -

http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=1590&tag=mncol;txt

And this : -

http://updates.zdnet.com/tags/Microsoft+Windows+7.html

It goes on about someone having a brief look at Windows 7 milestone 3. It doesn't have any pictures though. Oh and by the way a major update to windows vista is on it's way soon. Expected to come out Mid-December.

Quote from ZDnet article:

From what admittedly little I had a chance to see, Windows 7 does not look or feel like a major departure from Windows Vista.

I can't say I'm eager to see what Windows 7 is like. I am disappointed in Windows Vista for countless reasons. Perhaps they'll do better this time around. Unless the OS has noticeably improved since Vista, I'll be switching to Linux for my next upgrade.

Hope you don't mind the cynicism here... but I don't find that the least bit comforting. Grin

We'll just have to wait and see.

Well actually i'm only on Windows Vista Home Basic, but find it OK and wouldn't mind upgrading to either premium or ultimate. I wouldn't mind switching from the 32-bit version to the 64-bit version also, but i know i can't just upgrade to 64bit. I would have to clean install and start from scratch and i'm not sure i'd like to have to go through all that setting software up business. I've also got all sorts loaded on here and it would take ages. Oh and then i'd have to remember all those website log-ins. Oh well.

Can't wait to see some photos or a video of what Windows 7 (hope they change the name) will look like.

Rachel, I can't believe my eyes, I re-read your message twice to make sure Roll Eyes
Anyway I'm look forward to one more Linux user Wink BTW I wouldn't recommend drastic changes but rather trying dualboot first so if you wouldn't know how to perform task in Linux you can return and make it in Windows.

As for Vista I actually have a chance to work a bit with it and not really sure why everyone are so mad on it now? Smiley (on daily basis I'm still using Debian and experience with Vista was occasional).

My son is using Vista (business version I think) daily for a few months now and doesn't seem to have a problem with it. I am still on XP and get on fine, now with service pack 3.

I guess I would only upgrade if I get the OS included with a new computer.

maybe people get into trouble only if they solve certain type of tasks? or use it wrong way as it's not as tolerant as XP and rest.

Maybe someone who are not happy with Vista could name major drawbacks for you in using it?

The biggest drawbacks i can see is the start up and shut down times. It takes longer than XP to turn on and start up and the same when you want to close down and turn the computer off. Other than that (remember i'm on Vista Home Basic) it's just fine. It does ask a lot of questions when your doing things, but that's to security.

Just found this about Windows 7 :-
http://gizmodo.com/5069661/windows-7-walkthrough-boot-video-and-impressions

It shows some very nice pictures of Windows 7 and lets you read a bit of a review.

Notice the windows showing through windows.

I just asked my son about speed of boot up and turn off for Vista and he thinks it is about the same compared to XP, but he has a high performance PC (Quad core) for the Vista machine.

For XP I am now mostly turning off into standby and it is very quick to turn on and off.

I must say, I am not very amuzed by hearing about yet another version of Windows. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

With the financial meltdown, who wants to upgrade computers? Check out Google Docs, one more reason not to use MS Office.

in fact hardware transparency was available in Linux with Compiz long ago before Vista, so I've get a bit bored with this and return to plain windows again Smiley

Not sure why for so many people booting speed is such major concern, I don't turn my PC at all unless leave for long time as it record TV programs for me, only monitor is turned off when I'm away.
Also what is meant under term long? I've specially reboot my PC moment ago and it took me 1 minute to boot OS with GUI login screen(it's already fully working OS) and 26 seconds more to load GUI desktop environment fully with programs I need(other GUI may load much faster).

And now I'm wonder if it's long or fast comparing to XP or Vista?

you're totally right, but I've got feeling that most feeling believe that it's actually broken Tongue

We can't leave PC's that have multi-core processors on all the time due to the high power consumption. Our electricity bill is very high.

I think our computers boot up in around 1 minute too, only my laptop is slow. Going into standby saves all the power and takes just a few seconds.

Or in constant improvement  Wink Remeber Bill Gates is the richest man in the world so his formula is working so far. Maybe he has Linux installed on a computer at home just to keep an eye on competitors?

I'm lucky owner of old one core CPU Smiley Wonder if muli-core processors really improve working or gaming experience? As in theory it be useful for servers which solve different type of tasks not for home PCs...

I meant most people feel that it's broken Tongue But anyway everything is possible. As for Gates, I've heard he's not the richest person anymore.

The latest news on Windows 7 is that it will run on an SSD netbook. Windows 7 will be able to squeeze into 8GB of space. You would still need extra room to store and save files though.
 Smiley
Windows 7 will have a small enough foot print to fit into the latest netbooks unlike Windows Vista that has a foot print way too big to fit into a netbook.

Windows Vista was such a disappointment. They still copying features from other OS and integrating it into Windows system. They have to come with a new concept that will give them an edge over widely available OS as Linux and Mac OSX
