A few years ago I tried Ubuntu and was rather disappointed. However! I have tried the newest version of Ubuntu and have found that Ubuntu has really improved. I have switched my AA1 over to Ubuntu and the only problems I have found are that the sounds for login, shut down and system beeps only work when running from the Live CD but not when Ubuntu is installed. This may be a simple fix as I have not tried to fix it since the sound works when I play music so it is not important to me. I am to say the least impressed with Ubuntu.

I tried Ubuntu several years ago and found it to be sluggish, lacking, and just plain ugly (though that could have been easily taken care of with a new theme).

How is Ubuntu's speed comparative to other distros you have been using?

In my opinion, Fedora/RHEL is the best Linux distro I have ever used.

Don: I don't understand. Your post sounds like a positive review and you end with:

And a matter of taste.

It seems very similar to me depending on the hardware. Example on the AA1 it is quite a bit slower than the anemic Linpus that came with the AA1 but that is to be expected since Linpus has so little to it. However, on my AA9300 it runs about the same speed as Mepis, Mint, Fedora, Linspire or Elive possibly even faster. It is easier to use and found my hardware easily.

That's kind of hard to answer as I am really considering changing to Ubuntu but it is a little too soon to say for sure. More testing for stability, ease of use and reliability is needed.

I've tried both Ubuntu Live and installed version of Ubuntu. Never have trouble with sounds as have them disabled anyway Smiley
As for speed it was not blazing fast but not slow. Actually speed of most distributions you see on the market is heavily depend on desktop environment they are using(mostly KDE and GNOME) and settings applied to it.

Speed could be improved if you choose different window manager than default one, you'll be actually amazed by speed some of them offer like BlackBox or IceWM. There are a lot of them with own features, so you need to find one to suit your taste and needs.

GNOME and KDE are heavy desktops since they carry a lot of features and try to please wide audience, so no wonder they work a bit sluggish comparing to lightweight window managers.

What can I say? I love SUSE.

I have used Ubuntu before and I must say, they have a very strong community and they will sent you installation CDs in the mail free of charge.  Most of the time they will send you extra disks to hand out to friends as well.  I find they have improved very much over time.  The only issue I had with it was regarding sound.  But honestly, I have been a long term user of SUSE.  I used it way back before Novell became involved.  I can say that they did have some releases I did not care for after Novell became involved but I am now using the latest version of openSUSE and enjoy it as I use to long ago.  I can't say to much about speed since I am running a system with a quad core processor and 2gigs of ram.  Any system that has that kind of hardware will run any linux distribution quickly speed wise.  I tend to use linux for a while and then I would switch back to Windows when they come out with a new version.  Then when i get tired of Windows I would go back to linux.  I have already tried out the new Windows 7 and I am liking what im seeing so far in that OS.  But as for linux distributions, I can honestly say my favorite is SUSE.
