On my portal at http://5g8.net I have a news headlines set up on the right hand side of the page. This is simply a javascript code on the page that feeds from another site.

The last few days it has either been hanging on the page load, or not loading at all and the page has just been loading with my browser's cache from a previous day; no telling what someone has been getting who is visiting the site for the first time.

I am wondering if someone might have a script they would recommend that would:

1) Allow me to provide a headlines section, preferably with feeds from different sources, though CNN has been generally fine.

2) A timeout feature would be nice; something that if it can't get the feed in a certain specified timeframe it will default to loading something like 'not available' rather than keep trying for the feed.

3) If it had the ability for me to run it on my domain, but provide a cut and paste javascript I can insert into the page. This way I could also offer other visitors the ability to use my newsreader on their sites with a simple cut and paste code to add to their sites.

I haven't started looking around at readers yet. I thought I would post this just in case anyone might have any recommendations.

I used:

http://magpierss.sourceforge.net

This kind of script caches the feed so you don't get blocked for excessive requests of a feed.
