I downloaded the new Google Browser "Chrome" which runs under XP/Vista to make this post.

http://tools.google.com/chrome/

So far it seems to work OK and imported my FireFox settings.

A main point of interest for readers of this forum may be that it is based on the Apple Webkit framework of code so the pages should render like the Safari browser used on Macs. So it is maybe a handy way to test web site compatibility with Macs which used to be difficult to do from Windows.

I like the idea of the page tabs being across the top of the screen and I can't see any sneaky Adsense anywhere  Wink

p.s. weblamp forums seem to render fine in it.

I'm not so excited about appearing new browser product, I'm not sure if it would be reason for a lot of IE users to switch to open source alternative. I guess that Chrome may actually lure some users of Firefox with fancy interface it offers, but that's just guessing. Let's wait and see.

if say truth previously people never make accent on compatibility for Safari it was desired but nothing more. If it preserve full compatibility with Safari, than it's ok but if it become derivation than it would just be additional source of headache for all web designers...

For now I've checked several sites I was working on and everything seems to look identical to FF which is good thing.

Wonder when they launch version for Linux? as running it through emulator isn't big fun.

I found rendering different to FireFox, more like IE for my site www.multivar.org site. The difference is in the social widget in the footer. In Chrome and IE, the height of this widget more than the footer area that I have.

maybe I didn't spot difference since when I'm creating layout it's usually looks almost identical in all browsers and difference in sizes are less than 1%.

maybe if we keep it silent none would use it and there would be no additional headache during design process Grin just kidding.

Actually after playing with it a bit, I've got feeling it's much faster than competitors maybe even Opera, so guess it have good chances for success.

If that's the case, I think I'll have to give it a go. I am a loyal Opera user, but Chrome might make a nice substitute for IE. I also like the idea of internal spyware protection. This would be good for users like my grandmother.

It works nice and fast for me. But I still have some firefox extensions that I can't afford not to be with while browsing.

But the browser is really fast. I have tested various web pages and web application that drained the life out of this IE and FF. But, chrome has survived on almost every occasion. It has been developed from scratch and people from Google were working on it since mid 2003. Seems promising but early enough to comment if its a success or not. But with Google's backing it seems it will take a good market share in no time.

Although I test using each of the major browsers (and chrome is now added to the list), I'll more than likely stick with FF for day-to-day use. That said, competition is always a good thing for the push forward. I feel a browser loyalty poll coming.

I will download it in 2009 when they have got rid of the bugs and any outstanding issues and it is more of the finished article. Smiley

Chrome automatically detects the Web browser you're using and prompts you through the process of installation right down to telling you how to access downloaded files within Firefox, for example.

Has anyone tried to remove it? Is it easy to remove or will it try and stay on your computer?

I haven't tried to un-install it but it does appear in the Add/remove programs list in Control Panel. However it is not in the Google folder such as with Google Earth in the Program Files folder.

You could always search for it if it proves reluctant to go  Wink I think it's called chrome.exe judging by the shortcut properties. I don't thing big G would want it called a virus.

If you have ever tried to remove any of Symantec's software you would know that it also appears in the add remove list but that doesn't remove even half of what Symantec installs.
