There is a downside to living in Japan during summer, it is the Mosquitoes.

Yesterday I washed the car outside and got bitten several times around my ankles. Then tonight I opened an upstairs window for a short while and let one in and got bitten again.

You don't notice them because they inject something into you that stops you from feeling them sucking your blood, but afterwards it itches like hell. The itching takes an hour or so to wear off too.

Another thing is the strong UV. I also got some more sun burn even though it was around 4pm and cloudy.

When I go for a run I spray my legs and arms with some pungent lemon-like spray, it makes you choke if you breath even a small sniff of the stuff.

I noticed that the mosquitoes go mostly for my ankles or wrists. Like they know where the arteries are.

mosquitoes are problem here as well and especially it's problem for people who got allergy on their bites.
I've tried several things to avoid them, one which seems to work a bit is ultrasonic repellent keychain gadget but it seems to work only in summer when there are not too much mosquitoes and they are not very hungry. But in summer it's become almost useless and some mosquitoes still bite you.
Or maybe this device doesn't help against all kind of mosquitoes.

The best thing I've found working well for me and my girlfriend(she get more bites from mosquitoes all the time, and she got allergy on them. Guess they like her because her blood taste) is repellent OFF! it's also help from other insects, smell isn't fun but when you have to choose between being eaten by mosquitoes or this smell you'll definitely choose it Smiley

Also did you know that mosquitoes afraid some type of plants, when we were in Yalta there was a lot of pine trees around and there was totally no mosquitoes(at least not small ones, only big were present but they was really rare and never bite me).

indeed, from what I know they feel temperature of our body and attack places where they can easier get to blood source.

that's cool, I've just got sunburned too, as got first time to beach for this summer but I've spend almost whole day on sun, but getting sunburns during 4pm in cloud weather is something I can hardly imagine.

I'm sorry for you. I honestly can't stand that. Angry

I have yet to encounter a creature I despise more than the mosquito. Roaches, fleas, wasps, hornets, rodents? I can handle these pests. Mosquitoes are aggressive and persistent. Both my front and back yard are infested.

I live near a small lake and my house was built upon what was previously swampland. The city sprays regularly, but they only eliminate part of the problem.

I cannot walk through the backyard without being targeted by at least 15 mosquitoes. The backyard is full of plants, dirt, and other moist areas, making it a suitable dwelling for swarms of these vermin. The front is not nearly as bad, but I cannot sit outside for extended periods of time unless I use a repellent.

Our mosquitoes don't seem quite as particular. As long as there is exposed skin, they're ready to go.

At least living on swamp land brings you closer to nature  Wink

Your backyard seems like a no-go zone in summer unless you wear maybe a bee keepers outfit?

Rachel, if you have some pond or fountain inside your garden I strongly advice do same thing as we did here, just got to zoo shop and buy some cheap fresh water fish(we used two danio-rerio fishes from our aquarium as they become too aggressive against other fishes), don't really matter which one but better those which like to live in hot waters since pond most likely become hot during daytime.
Previously we had a lot of mosquito's larva in water, but with just few fishes they were eliminated in natural way, and I got feeling that mosquito population was really affected by this...

Rachel, what about having a house for bats in garden? I've read they could do magic and eliminate mosquitoes around area they live.

Denis, your advice to Rachel is very good.    We had a pond on the farm and had no problem with mosquitoes.    The fish in the pond took care of that.

Andy, growing up as a redhead with very sunburnable skin; I got most of my worst sunburns on cloudy days.   I used to go to the beach at Lake Michigan and swim.   Sunburn blisters are no fun, let me tell you.

I'm not sure which rays from the sun on cloudy days burn you, but they seem to be intensified by going through the clouds.   Or maybe one just thinks they won't get burned because it's cloudy.   Ouch!
