Cool PHP function for use with Image Uploads

You know when you want to provide an image upload service to your website visitors and these people will likely upload monster-sized photos to the web? Well, the easy way to make it easy for them and control your bandwidth is to let them upload their monster jpegs and use the PHP function imagecopyresampled  to resize their image to your preferred dimensions.

Just write some code to size the longest edge to your maximum limit or leave it unchanged if the uploaded image size doesn't need reducing.

Then resize the large image to a thumbnail as well.

This function also keeps the smaller images looking good. The file sizes end up being quite small.
