I bought a package of 3 character dotnet domains not too long ago. It was originally in an auction of 5 domains, but apparently one of them expired or was sold separately. The seller offered me the package for $20 USD for the remaining 4; so I took it. Checking other such packages from the same seller, auctions for them average at $15 a domain; so I'm thinking that $5 a domain wasn't too bad.

What to do...what to do...with 3 character dotnets? Roll Eyes

I used one of them for the smileys site.

On another forum, a member was asking me about some webmaster tools I had listed on the z54.org site (idiot me had to ask 'what tools?'; I had apparently forgot about the links on the site).

Being that I had this Create-a-Page site sitting on my hard drive (yes, I have a few old sites, previous sub-domains, just sitting around doing nothing) I decided to do a few quick updates (probably a few dead links still on the page, and the color picker won't work on newer browsers) and upload it to one of these domains, as it would be a lot better resource than the few links of z54.org.

It additionally provides a use for one of these domains that is beyond a simple parking page.

I have six of these 3 character dotnets. Two are now being used. I'm going to take a look at some old sites and see if any of them are worth a darn to upload to them. At least it gives me something better than a parking page and might actually garner some backlinks in the process.

Oh...

...the domain is http://j9q.net (yep, no relation to the subject matter whatsoever  Grin)

I can't think of any advantage to having a 3 random character domain name over a longer name containing keywords. I think I would try and sell them on for more than I paid. You just have to find someone dumb enough to pay for them.

I think that they are pretty much like swampland in Florida; it's worthless, but at least you own property in Florida. Grin

Haven't decided what I am going to do with them. Figured I might as well put something on them and build some page rank and backlinks. At least 3-4 will end up being sold off.

And yet, another one.

This time, though, I am using it to play around with a perl script that allows visitors to create their own homepages. I'll also be adding a forum script that will allow visitors to create their own forums; a very basic flat forum.

Though my intention is to work with some of these scripts, though not necessarily the ones I will use on the new site, being that I am using the homepages script on the z54 site, I discovered some mistakes I already made with it by delving deeper into the script.

It is a royal pain in the butt working with multiple files for the template.

Presently the script on this site is not enabled; it is all there, but I need to set permissions to get it to work and am going to be testing different permissions to see if I can get it to work with more secure permissions that the recommended 777.

For now, only the homepage is up. Clicking on any links won't take you anywhere. If you want to have some fun and complain about my template, go ahead.

http://6vl.net

I'm going to be testing some social networking scripts on some other domains. If anyone has any they would like to recommend, please do. Presently I am looking at PHPizabi and Joomlapolis. I can't afford to buy one, so open source is where I am having to look.

Could you not build a basic site around them and then maybe sell it all as one package on ebay to those folks that want their very own professionally designed website?

Most of these 3 character dotnets with random characters seem to be more of badges than anything else. Someone can proclaim to have such a domain that is not available anymore. Of course, a three character dotnet would be a bigger badge, but means just as little.

I did come up with a use for 6vl.net; even though it was a stretch.

I have a use for 5pb.net as well; and that's a stretch as well.

Something like p4o.net could feasibly be used for a blog about oil prices; price4oil Grin.

I will sit on these for a while and build up backlinks. There are some Google apps, or something like that, that Andy mentioned in a thread that could be used for providing sticky content for other sites, but it uses Google's resources rather than drawing off of your site. This could be an advantage as selling one of these domains that used sticky content would create dead space on other sites if someone used it but it was then removed from the site by the new owner.

The p40.net would be ideal for a sports related site such as the Pro 40 cricket here in the UK.

That's p4o (letter-number-letter) not p40.

You'd notice when people are typing in p40 instead of p4o and going to the wrong site.

Maybe something starting in "pro" is available? I would list suggestions but they might get snapped up.
