For my latest site, there is a feature where people can upload photos and my script automatically generates 3 images from what people upload.

It's pretty cool since the users don't have to do any photo editing and I keep my bandwidth usage sane.

Digital camera images have an aspect ratio of 4:3 like TV so bear this in mind when you code photo manipulating solutions.

The resolutions that I decided to go with are:

120x90 pixels - thumbnail image
240x180 - medium sized image
640x480 - large image

This is easily scalable from the uploaded digital camera images.

The thumbnail is shown in the listings of all the images, the medium sized image shows up in the details page and the large image pops up in it's own window and a click on this closes the window.

Further work could involve inserting a water mark into the larger image but in my case the images are not artistic works.

So, do you think the image sizes I am going with are good choices?

Yes. You've gone with very reliable image sizes.

For one marketing job I have I am required to create new images for nearly every upload, simply because the webmasters/designers decided to use uncommon image sizes. It's annoying at best. Sticking with 120X90 is an especially good policy.
