With the black hat people trying their best to auto-generate sites and others building 100 sites at a time using scripts, I think it pays to think about how you make your amateur site stand out from this crowd to get better search engine ranking.

Some simple ideas I have are:

  • Have a Favicon
  • Create a custom logo
  • Validate your site at validator.w3.org and include the validation icon in your about page
  • Include a contact page with an email - this is for human reviewers
  • Add content over time
  • Build inbound links slowly
  • Link to your site from places that require approval such as forums and blog comments

If you get my drift, I am suggesting you do what is difficult for automated systems to accomplish to gain points in the ranking algorithmns.

Links and accurate information provide the best answer, while garbage in provides garbage out.

This is a good way to show that a webmaster cares about the quality of their content and design. Also, one of the nice things about creating W3C valid webpages is the possibility to be included in more directories, such as W3Csites.com.

I think this is very important, yet I find that many websites do not have contact information. It's quite frustrating when I have an error to report or a question to ask. I do not trust websites without it.
