Doing a search on Google, I found a result and clicked on it.

I ended up getting a Windows message box that told me I was being redirected to their main page.

The site uses frames, but the page that loads in the frame is the page I was trying to get anyway.

Anybody know how they did this?

Here is the link that will get redirected: http://www.fast-rewind.com/nightofthecreeps.htm

Hi Menard,

I couldn't see exactly what they did. Anyway, using frames to mask a page URL is trickery such as to hide an affiliate link or use somebody else's content without permission.

Using Javascript is the usual way to do a timed redirect I think since it needs to redirect after the page has loaded.

Normally it's a bad idea though to do these kinds of redirects for SEO reasons. If a page has moved, the URL should be instantly redirected with an appropriate HTTP code such as 301 before the page loads. This can be done in a variety of ways such as with PHP or .htaccess Why keep the visitor waiting unless you are playing tricks?

I thought the redirect could be useful for my CargoShip site which uses frames.

If someone comes to the site from a search, they could come in on a content page; so I have links to the main page on content pages.

I have been curious if there was a way to redirect someone coming from a search engine, or perhaps a bookmark site, to the main page and load the content page that was bookmarked into the frame.

I saw this redirect and it does that; aside from the annoying window message.

I see. That is the big problem with frames. The way to do it is to have code on the content page that checks the URL of the referring page and if it is external, then re-direct to the outer frame. Or it can be done with other techniques such as sessions that check that the main frame was loaded previously.

But pushing and shoving your visitors around is not a good idea IMHO, better to lose the frames since it must be 10 year old technology now. I did use frames myself before but I had the same problems that you are having. Now people don't even call them frames but "iframes" which is wrong, but the way things have changed.
