Just now there are some big blasts of lightning going on with some shock waves of sound that physically shook my wooden house.

Very bizarre weather right now for me (in Japan at this minute).  Shocked

hope you and your family would be safe. If weather didn't change maybe it's better to power off everything and do something not electricity related simply to save your equipment and minimize chances of electric shock from lightning.

I hope that I don't seem insensitive or ignorant when I say that sounds exciting. I have to admit-- I enjoy bad weather. How long before it died down?

I second Denis. 'Hope you guys are safe.

I'm presently not too fond of bad weather.

I just got back online due to a storm taking out my computer last Friday.

I am using an older computer that was sitting in the corner collecting dust. It's slow, comparatively, but I'm back online.

Now I need to get my computer fixed when I can afford it. Sad

I enjoy watch lighting too as live very close to sea and lighting frequently hit water surface very close and I find it scary but very beautiful in same time.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune, Bob. Good that at least you had backup PC.
Have you manage to find out what part was damaged as maybe you'll be able to assemble on PC damaged and slow one which would be some kind of compromise?

The slow one, which I am using now, is a Compaq iPAQ; a desktop computer, not the handheld. It is a compact design that only has the ability to replace the hard drive or memory; no other parts are exchangeable, as there is no room.

I think the memory was damaged. It will not even try to boot. I just can't afford the memory for it right now, and considering what a good refurb would cost in comparison, I might just save up for a refurb and use the hard drive in the old one, provided that it survived, as a slave drive.

We are safe. I got used to earth tremors and thunderstorms.

It's still windy with occasional thunder. I do find it kind of exciting to see lightning but I think it was getting a bit close for comfort last night.

We often get loud bangs from thunder.

My house moves around even due to the wind which it is doing a bit now.

No earth quakes so far this year though.

p.s. a weird thing I discovered in Japan is that crows gather around houses where somebody is close to death. A while ago we kept getting crows perched on the roof and squawking loudly. Now they have gone and so has my neighbour who passed away the other day. The houses are badly insulated so I guess they can smell something. Does the human body give off a characteristic smell near the time of death?

Believe me or not but I've dealt with it when was sailing across Europe. One of my friend bought such very cheap, but it had password protected BIOS which we couldn't get into to install new bigger hard drive.

So PC is still working partially as from what I know most of time power supply or CPU with motherboard die first. If it's really memory tell me what type of memory you have, I had somewhere 512mb which doesn't fit to my new motherboard and I can't find time to sell it, so if I find it I can send it to you.

sounds a bit scary, but from what I know there are a lot of stories that cats and dogs feel the same thing and behave differently when person is close to death, maybe they have some sense (maybe not just smell) which let them feel that death is close, not sure.

I know that the fan, video card, and lights work on it; beyond that I don't know anything else as it won't boot or even try to boot. The assumption is that it is the memory as I have experienced a similar problem with a computer that had a bad memory strip which refused to boot until it was removed.

I don't know what type of memory it takes. It is under the Compaq right now, so it would be difficult to check. It is an IBM NetVista. Considering that it is an old P3 866MHZ, it might well be time to replace it anyway; just never cared to before as...well...it worked...until now. The Compaq, by comparison, is a Celeron 500MHZ.

Nothing else was damaged by the storm. I have the computer connected to two surge protectors. Everything else connected to those same protectors was fine, as well was the protectors themselves.

When it happened, I was awakened at the moment by the loud thunder, and thought I had seen a flash of light and heard a popping sound; thought it was my imagination, 'til I tried to get on the computer.
