I just found this article that shows the current security of Linux over Mac and Vista.

Isn't that because hackers only use Linux as their OS?  Wink

Proof:

some had found bugs in the Linux operating system but many of them didn't want to put the work into developing the exploit code that would be required to win the contest.

After two days of work, Shane Macaulay finally cracked the tiny Fujitsu laptop running Vista on Friday, with a little help from his friends.
Yeah, his friends in Microsoft where he did contact work before.

The Mac lasted 2 minutes.

I don't know if that is really true, but may be.

Ha ha.

Anyway it's easy to hack into Linux. Create a free virus scanner with your special extra features added to it and offer it for free download. People expect a virus scanner to connect regularly to a remote server and scan all the files on a computer.

That wouldn't work on Linux. Well I'm not sure if you were stupid enough to run in root it may possibly cause some problems.

Considering that the average Linux user isn't all that bright anyway, I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Of course, you would be prompted to login as root during the install. It's vital to scan your whole computer IMHO since your OS may be compromised from the download site or disc the well meaning friend lent you.

To make this easier, you could maybe "improve" on an existing open source solution.

because not sure like in other parts of the world but here people are likely to start thinking about protections like firewalls, virus scanners only after they got their PC infected and loose some data or PC stop booting, but not before Smiley
On Linux it's hard to achieve this for average user especially if not give him root password.

And remember that there are several free scanners available directly from list of packages to install, you need to click on them once and they would be installed.

Even being prompted to login as root during the install wouldn't do much good. For changes to files and folders other than a users personal files folders the root password has to be provided as the system requires.

Yes, you can download from different sources but there is not much reason to since good software for your distro is most likely available from trusted repositories. This greatly reduces the chance of getting viruses and such.

Another advantage to Linux and open source software is that it is open meaning that you can see everything that is going on in the programs. While I personally would not be able to do this since I don't have the programing knowledge. I know that there are many others that do have this knowledge and that they do look at new software and when or if they find some malicious software they warn their friends. This word spreads fast so the malicious software just doesn't get much chance to spread.
