We're about to commence link building for our new site and wondered how many directories is safe to submit to each month.

Is it ok to submit to 100 per week or is that too much?

hi Ruggy, what is your concern about number of submissions? Do you afraid that search engines will see this and penalize your site?
Remember that if you would submit to legitimate directories listing there could take time and it's possible that your site wouldn't be accepted everywhere.
Also I believe there are less than 100 directories worth to submit to.
I know there are bunch of small directories but they don't have a lot of traffic and most of them ignored by search engines anyway...

Hope that answers your question?

I don't think listing your sites may harm you , but some listing will not bring any traffic or value to you. So If you can list your site with high traffic sites ,it may bring you traffic and give you quality backlink.

Hundred submissions per week is good. You won't have disadvantages with 100 submissions per week. But, be sure you are submitting for good directories

as I said in similar topic: 10 to 100 directories at most is enough. Quality vs quantity Smiley... I choose quality.

It may be worth it if your target is less popular search engines, but if you want to increase traffic with Big G, it is a waste of time. Big G has never been a big fan of directory links and in recent months they have been devalued even further.

If you are going to submit to directories, focus on a few relevant, high authority directories (such as DMOZ) and skip the rest.

As many as you like, just remember that google is placing lesss emphasis on directory links as we speak.  i would only submit to the top directories with the highest PR

It's better to create your own directory IMO. They at least pay for your hosting costs in my experience. Now it may be better to focus on a niche so your Adsense is more targeted to a specific niche so you get more coin per click (CPC).

For example, you register a domain name such as distressautionhomes.com and offer listings to estate agents and home auctioneers, just thinking out loud here. Then you can sell Ad spots at say $100 a month, capture the PPC Ads of the real estate people and get organic search traffic related to this niche.

I would be careful to pay attention to the directories that you are submitting too. There are a bunch of spammy directories that I'm sure Google doesn't look kindly on. I would spend some time submitting to the top directories and spend more time building back links on blogs and forums and perhaps even through article submissions.

If you are submitting to a directory to help improve your site's link popularity and they are adding the nofollow attribute to outgoing links, it is not going to help you. Unless you are expecting to get some traffic from the directory, avoid it.

Look for good directories was the primary key. Don't waste time on submitting things on not so familiar one.  Embarrassed

i'd say start small and sustain it.  it would look very suspicious if you have too many directory links this month and then none the next.
