What graphic programs are you using? Do you use Windows or Mac? You'll need something capable of cropping and resizing images. Photobie is a freeware graphic program that will allow you to create screenshots. You can download it from Tucows here.

I'm going to use the Photobie software to demonstrate what you need to do in order to create a screenshot.
Once you have decided on the page for the screenshot, do the following:

1. Open Photobie. Print the screen using the PrintScreen function on your keyboard.
2. Locate "Edit" at the top menu and then click "Paste as New Image."
3. Locate the "Select Specific Region" function on the icon bar right below the top menu. It looks like a deformed blue star. Select the region of the screenshot that you want for your portfolio image.
4. Select Edit > Copy, and then Edit > Paste as New Image.
5. Locate "Image" at the top menu and click "Resize Layer Image." Resize it.
6. Save the image.

Now personally, I don't like the way Photobie resizes images. If you have a better program on hand, I would recommend it. You can find plenty more freeware image editing software here.

Regardless of what program you're using, you're basically doing this: 1) Taking a screenshot, 2) Pasting it into your image editing program, 3) Cropping out the screenshot, and 4) Resizing.

I found something very easy to use: http://www.websnapr.com/
It automatically takes and resizes screenshots of specified webpages for you. It leaves the company watermark in the bottom-right corner, though. This is a poor idea for a professional site, IMHO.

The screengrab! plugin for the Firefox browser allows you to capture images of web pages, even when they are longer than the visible area which is useful.

As mentioned by Andy, screengrab for FF is great for taking the entire page.

But that only works for what you can see on the screen. The plugin captures the whole web page as an image which avoids you needing to stitch together images of a long web page that requires scrolling.

Ack! I have been living with the old printscreen copy-paste method for practically the whole of my life! This is useful information, thanks for saving me the trouble. My laptop lags big time when I open Photoshop.. probably because of the 20+ browser windows I have open. haha

BTW: There are freeware programs for creating Thumbnails. A freeware that has more options for .jpg photos

Many people prefer to use their favorite graphics program to make thumbnails - one at a time. This allows 'fine tuning' instead of 'batch conversions'. No matter what is used, it's better to finalize the full size image before creating a thumbnail. Making a thumbnail with a 'general' graphics program is simple
