If anyone has ever noticed the award at the bottom of my CargoShip site (what do you mean you have never visited my site? Cry), well...I had been working on a simple site to go along with that award.

Sitting around today, with obviously nothing better to do  Roll Eyes , I happened upon that simple template and, primarily for fun, put it up on the web.

Yes, it is suppose to be ugly; and as dang many times as I have been told my sites were ugly when I did not intend them to be, I hope this time around I truly made one that was nausea inspiring (NO! That's mean. This is the first nausea inspiring site I have made...thank you very much.).

Does anyone have a band-aid gif Grin

Only the template has been uploaded. None of the links go anywhere.

Fair warning: though a very simple template, the color choices almost scream for the viewer to wear shades; protect your eyes. Cool

P.S. I think I'll put an ad for Excedrin on the site. Grin

I don't think anyone wants that award Menard  Roll Eyes

The "Award" scam has died off now I think. Seals of approval from security evaluation sites may be better. Or maybe some humorous ones could be thought up?

Why don't you make the "Scariest Website" online, that would be up your street or down your dark alley more I think  Grin Yeah, the dark alley that scares the heck out of all who venture down it but at the end is the door (after some steps down into the dark)  to the best bar in town!

Wow. That is hideous. I don't think I've seen a site that ugly in years. Grin

I have to admit, the award itself is quite humorous.

As far as the awards are concerned, you may do better making an honorable award. In your case, something that focuses on quality content would be good. I like Andy's suggestion for a seal of approval. Making it an internal program would be preferrable since the traffic would be directed to the CargoShip itself. Awards, if created with serious intent, are good for some traffic.

The idea of the award is nothing serious, and quite frankly something I don't actually expect anyone to link on their site.

I asked someone to make the award graphic not long after I had started the CargoShip site. Being that several webmasters wanted to take potshots at the design, I thought it would be appropriate to apply an award for ugliness to both take the criticisms in stride and to say something about my own site that they could not top. Grin

The ugliest site award is not so much anything that anyone actually wants on their site, but rather a place where someone can submit sites that are strange, weird, plainly odd, or just plain ugly. It would be sort of a directory where someone can have fun with suggesting a site, or even their own site.

Someone could have fun with the 'comments or quotes' section for submission. Comments made about the CargoShip could serve as an example:

"Wow; I haven't seen a design like that...well...since the 80s."

"Proof that not everybody understands the meaning of the word 'website'."

"Reminds me of bad 60s sci-fi television; too bad this one wasn't 'Lost in the Web'."

Winners, aside from sending hate mail to me, will have the option of carrying the award on their site, but regardless, they will have their site with comments and quotes about it at the top of the list. All sites nominated and winners will stay on a permanet list with comments and screenshots attached to the link.

This is a possible working idea. I'm not going to invest a lot of time in this. I got the domain for $2.99, so it seemed cheap enough to try as an experiment. If it doesn't work out because of lack of interest or just me not getting it done due to spending time on more pressing projects, it's not a big loss. We'll see what happens. At the very least, I have proven that there can be a site uglier than the CargoShip. Grin

It looks to me as though you've got all your ideas together on this one, and it actually sounds like a fun little experiment. Who knows, it just may gain some decent recognition as more and more ugly website owners place it in view for a good laugh from their surfers.

At any rate, I understand that you don't expect much reciprocation, but I would still encourage webmasters to link back the award if they do decide to display it. Motivate their visitors to submit other ugly sites they may have seen floating around during their travels. After all, they've managed to spot at least one ugly site. Certainly they've seen others.

I think most of us made some very ugly website designs when we first started on the web.

I recently read a couple of posts by webmasters that acknowledge that they have ugly looking sites but they make money and/or rank well in search engines. So it's more about content than how web 2.0 your site looks!

When Menard first appeared on this forum, I honestly thought he was playing some kind of practical joke by asking for reviews of his website. It was the worst design I ever saw apart from my own 1st site that is maybe archived on the way back machine. It was called sharelinks.co.uk if you care to dredge it up  Grin

So, I guess we all have to start somewhere, but I think it is better to rapidly get away from the bad design side of things.

Another, related 8 year old site is still up: http://sharelinks.htmlplanet.com

I think it was the cargo ship. It had a very weird background pattern.
