Yesterday there was strong fog here, so using a chance I've made few shots of port in the night. I've got two similar images, one was taken in the beginning and second after some time when fog become stronger.
Would appreciate any opinions and critique about them. Both pictures are straight from the camera, I decide not to play with white balance before hear some opinions on them:

Hey, everybody vote first before reading my reply.

This is just here for filler. Grin

Nope, not to my comments yet. Tongue

Yep, pretty much here.

I voted for the second one.

Even though you did better, technically, with the horizon in the first shot, I like the way the highlights of the lights play with the fog more in the second one. The darkness of the sky in the first, IMO, is rather a void of darkness; though for many circumstances that can work. The heavier fog of the second shot allows the lights of the port to play against it, adding highlights and pushing some light into what was otherwise a simply dark area.

Of course, that's just my opinion. Tongue

Thanks for comments, Bob!

indeed I've messed with composition on the second shot, as it was pretty dark and I don't have optical viewfinder to precisely compose the scene, I've just look for lams which was looking as dots and try to put them in right place Grin
I've also took it from different position as wish to get rid of shore line.

BTW maybe you'll like this one more: http://forum.weblamp.net/img/photo/nightfog3.jpg as it's actually my favorite, I didn't upload it only for reason that with part of shore I've cut few windows on the dock, but maybe it's not so bad as I think?

Also what is your overall opinion of these photographs are they any good or not?

The photographs are fine and the composition is generally good in all of them.

I do like the third one the best as well. It comes in between the first two in that more light is evident in the photograph, but the details are more clear and give more life to the subject. I actually think cutting off the windows, though others may disagree, is better, as in the others the right edge becomes dark while cutting off the windows like that looks brighter and suggests there is even more life that it is leading to.

glad to hear this as windows was my main concern as I though that they brake apart composition(kind of leaving part of leg or hand out of frame).

And thanks once again for your comments, I appreciate this!

I prefer #1 since the others are too bright for my liking. The point of interest is the work going on where the blue lights are and the surrounding items add interest but blend into the background.

I love this photo, it's great!

p.s. how about this idea: looping audio clips to go with photos in a gallery. So for your photo, it could have some sounds of the sea, birds and the industrial sounds?

Thanks for feedback, Andy! BTW Svetlana have similar opinion, guess it's because you both born in same day Grin

nice idea, but I'm not really sure it would be interesting, as actually during taking this photo everything was very quiet(probably fog damped sounds a bit). Usually you can hear voice of seabirds only in day and when you feed them, there are sound of unloading and loading cargo onto ships but it's not very interesting(at least to me).
Anyway next time I'll try to record sound to see what would appear from this.

I have to say that after repeatedly looking at both of them side-by-side, I came to the conclusion that I liked the second one better. The first picture lost too much information, I think. They're both very good, however!

In general, if I plan on post-processing an image, I find that the lighter ones are easier to adjust. You can reduce information in an image, but you can't really add to something that's not already there. If you intend to do any post-processing, there's more potential for the second image.

After seeing the 3rd, I agree that it's my favourite. It's the perfect medium between the two. I prefer the composition as with in picture 1, but the available details as with in picture 2.

I originally liked the first one as the second one seemed washed out even though the first one was a little dark. Then I saw the 3rd one and it is best. It is not as dark but is not washed out either. I also agree that composition of the third one is better since it eliminates the dark wasted edge of the photo and brings the eye to the main point "the work that is going on".

Thank you for feedback Don and Teflon! And thanks again to everyone!
your feedback really let me look onto pictures from different point of view and to find out things I didn't saw previously. Hopefully this would help me to make better photo next time Smiley
