Some sites monitor what you look up for a domain name and register it themselves if you don't immediately register the domain name:

this is there for quite a while

use domaintools.com or domainstate.com or registrar.verisign-grs.com/whois

Domaintools is the safest IMO

I'm not 100% sure was it coincedence or not, so wouldn't mention registrar name here, but I've run in similar situation myself in the past.

Hmm... the internet is a great way to harbor thieves, simply because they are less likely to be held accountable. It appears that if there is a way to do something dishonestly, there will always be someone willing to do it. It doesn't need to be said...

Thanks for the article.

I wish their computer that cancels the domain names just before the 5 day grace period had a fault and they had to actually pay for millions of worthless domain names.

i am pretty sure that when u look for a certain name and it suggest a good one, it gets taken under ur nose. I had personal experience with domain I looked up, it was very brandable and available and within 10 minutes it got registered and parked. i really wouldnt trust such sites.

I thought about writing a script to find all the unregistered domain names but I expect this has already been done up to a few characters in length and required humans to decide what is good and what is no good out of the 1000's of results.

Yeah, in such a corrupt industry, this must have been done and alert triggers are probably set on domains with any likely value that are searched on and not immediately registered.

Read about it on Bob Parson's (GoDaddy big daddy) blog or domaintools.com Millions of domain names are registered and never paid for or sniped from under your nose. maybe they fixed all these problems now? It been a while since I read the domain news.
