From what I have been reading online and observing with my own sites; I think these are some tips you could use:

Make sure your website contains unique, educational content to maximize the user experience after they landed on your site from a search.

Where you have sponsored Ads, use either the rel=nofollow tag in the hypertext link or use a redirect script that is mentioned in the robots.txt file as a file path to ignore.

Avoid anything that looks like a linking exchange scheme.

Personally I am moving towards linking out to only relevant sites, so I removed some links to my own sites that were not relevant topic-wise.

Also, never agree to sell links designed to boost PR on another site. You can still sell advertising space, but you have to disclose this with the rel=nofollow tag or the robots exclusion method I mentioned above. You can probably, also display the links via javascript code since there is a buffer between your page and the other sites. This helps the search engine realize that they are not normal hypertext links.

This should improve the quality score of your site. Then you have to work on getting quality, natural inbound links to get high organic search result positioning.

Before, directory submission used to be one of the big ideas floated around. I never went in for this much due to potential corruption and need to pay. What I think is better, is to write articles that relate to your site and submit these to human edited article directories. Then you generate quality inbound links to your site from high ranking article sites. I didn't understand the purpose of submitting articles before but since quality inbound links are important, I think I finally get it e.g. an independent reviewer will assess your article which is different to you being the sole judge of whether to publish or not to your blog/site. Then, if your article is accepted, it could produce a quality inbound link from your author resource box. There is also the traffic from the republished article in ezines etc. to consider as well.
