Just found this nice collection of 80 tutorials for achieving various text-effects in Photoshop, e.g. water, ice, fire, air, metal letters and others.
Check yourself: http://www.photoshoproadmap.com/Photoshop-blog/2007/07/22/the-best-80-photoshop-text-effects-on-the-web/

not yet, Don, but I believe if you worked on both systems I think that it would be easy to replicate most things done in photoshop to GIMP.
(I'm going to try it when finish project and hand over it to customer. But if you try first, please share your results.)

Wow! Some amazing text effects. Good for creating logos. It must be a lot of fun playing with Photoshop.

p.s. I wonder if "Photoshop" is becoming a verb as in to "Photoshop some graphics"? A bit like to "Google a search term".

I think so. When I was taking media arts classes, other students frequently said things like, "Oh, he must have photoshopped that!" I have also been asked by clients several times to "photoshop [something]" for them. It is funny the way words evolve online and in real-life as well.

you're right Andy, I think there are much more words like this. We have a lot of them in Russian but sometimes when you speak in company with person who is familiar with such words other may look on you like on freak Smiley
