I'm a llama!

« on: October 11, 2007, 03:21:57 AM »

I've recently launched a new website. The problem is, it looks different on other computers. The menu is bunched together on some pages, on the bio page, there is a photo on top of a block of text. Please take a look at the site at http://www.grantprather.com. If you can offer me advice as to how to fix the site, I'd REALLY appreciate it.

I looked through your site and it looks good to me using Firefox 2.0.0.7. I see you have some validation errors but from what I know those errors are not the type that can effect the looks of your site. I tried viewing the bio page in different resolutions and the site held together fine down to 1024 but the text and images over lapped the background at 800x600. This would be caused by the cell width settings for your second table. If you used the variable settings in the cells as you did with the table settings that may help but the images are still going to be of a set width and will limit the lower edge of the resolutions your site will work with.

I just had another look using the developers tool bar with the tables outlined and the tables broke as you can see in the image.

I am not sure why but it seems you have some table setting that is not correct. Maybe it is due to using 50% and trying to align the 4 tables together. This is not something that works well. It would be better if you used a solid table for that and just broke the table up into more cells.

Hi: I know it's been a while since I've been on here. But I finally got around to making some changes to the webiste: http://www.grantprather.com

I took out some tables, simplified it. Please take a look and see if it looks okay. I created the site on a mac and I use the Firefox browser. But I've had the problem of it looking much different on a PC. If some of you have PCs, please browse my site and see if there are any design errors.

Thanks SO MUCH!

I'm looking at it, and eventually my brain will kick in, but I am using IE on a 1024 resolution and have to scroll left to right; not by much, mind you, but it is not fitting the width of my browser.

I can't identify the problem right now, but as don said, and I was thinking along a similar line as don (ewwww Shocked) that you are using too many tables rather than just using cells and perhaps a table for your text area.

That is just your home page, the other pages fit my screen just fine.

The only other problem I am having is with the 'press' button. Nothing happens when I click on it; I have to right click and open it in a new window to get the page. What is this 'pressmapMap' associated with the link?

Thank you for looking. As for the pressmap, that was just a mistake on my part. I'll fix that. Are you on a PC or Mac? Should I put one of those disclaimers on the site to specify a resolution that the site would look best on?

That's a big no no. You will annoy your visitors, nobody is going to change their screen resolution or browser just to view your site.

Jgprather you have changed the look quite a bit. It still does not validate and most of that is due to you are not using the proper size labels in your code.

Your site does not work at resolutions below1028 px width due to the size of your images. The real problem is that you are using an image at the bottom of the page called virginiaquote.gif. If you change that to a block with text in it your site would be fluid down to 855 px width which with the current monitor sizes should be quite sufficient.

On your home page you are not using any alt attributes or title attributes and this makes your site unfriendly to handicap people that can't see the images also the title attitribute can used to provide information on the images to help search engines to find your site.

I would suggest you try to use an external CSS style sheet which would allow you to create one style sheet and then use t for all your pages so when you change on line of code it will change all your pages.

Note if you make the site more fluid you will not need a disclaimer.
