I am trying out bbPress since it is a light weight forum script from the people behind WordPress. WordPress is the #1 Blogging script which I have used a lot. It is simple to install, it's resistant to spam and it is well supported by plugin authors. It remains to be seen how well bbPress will perform as a forum script but I like to support it now via: http://weightlossforum.urgentclick.com

Many of the established forum scripts are very old and being regularly updated to combat attacks and exploits and even basic things like search engine optimization has to be done via additional code and sometimes paid code.

Did you notice any new generation Forum scripts being released?

Maybe discuss them here....

I have been looking at this new script.

I may be using it for one of my sites for a reviews section.

Even though I have a forum on the site, I wanted to have a reviews sections separate from the forum. After considering other types of scripts, and really not wanting to have to approve every single submitted review (provided there are any Roll Eyes), it seemed like using a forum script would be the best option.

I like the speed and the ability to have a 'latest posts' section at the top of the forum.

It seems to be working OK for me and is very simple and quick. I suspect it will quickly gain support from the WordPress community to iron out any bugs.

I think that market is overload with different forum scripts, personally I believe that there are no point on creating new one as making it very simple and very secure is probably doesn't work in these days. From other side creating big, feature reach project is time consuming and require people force which would be hard to motivate for creating another free forum script or if it's commercial one you'll have hard task competing with old players and becoming more popular each day blogs...
That's why I'm a bit skeptical about bbPress.

I wasn't able to check it out today as I've keep getting connection time out, probably it's my ISP...

actually this could be pretty easy done in SMF(of course if I correctly understand the feature), let me know if you need help in changing code.

I wanted a forum that has razor sharp focus and is like a user generated content web site focused on a particular niche. Complex forum scripts offer too many distractions. To appreciate what I am saying, you may have to take a step back and carefully observe what you see on the pages.

I've visited your forum and guess it should work perfectly if it's used as support forum for some site and doesn't need unnecessary complexity.

That's more or less what I was looking for to use on a site of mine. For that one I chose Phorum; largely because it is a script that was used on a forum where I had been a member for several years and I liked it, plus it is a very secure script.

I wanted to set up a simpler message board with just linear threads, without separate forums. All recent posts would be visible, and nothing else.

The forum where that was previously used eventually switched to SMF. As a forum, it has grown, but it has lost some of its close knit community it had before. With separate forums now, rather than just one message board for everything, it makes it difficult to keep up with discussions.

Admittedly I like a comprehensive forum for some sites as well, such as my Cage forum, but that one fell through due to the complexity of the forum.

Most any forum software could, I guess, be adapted to what you want, but why bother with that if there is a script that offers what you want right out of the box?

Phorum offered what I wanted right out of the box for a message board.

I'll see if bbpress offers what I want for the reviews section. It looks promising as it does not have a lot of extras, which I don't need for the reviews section, and it uses html tags (as do many forum scripts) allowing flexibility for the reviewer. I do like the out-of-the-box layout which is more ideal for what I need.
