Website templates are ready-made web designs created for you to use as a basis for fast and high-quality web development.

Besides the design which makes me think of the graphical design, the underlying code is very important for getting your content ranked well in search engines. It also plays a part in the delivery of dynamic content.

So a template could be as simple as some html plus graphics or it could be a package called a theme that includes graphics, html, server-side code and supporting files such as .htaccess, robots.txt and other files.

Blogs normally use a theme which means you don't need a web design company to expand your site beyond the initial site structure. If you buy a template, you may be stuck with a few pages and have to pay per page to expand your site.
