you can try exchanging links with relevant sites, although it could be time consuming.
Other option is listing at good directories but you need to be careful choosing one, since there are many new directories appeared on the web which have as a main purpose not collecting good resources but making money, so you should check what sites are already listed and what are criteria of acceptance in any particular dir.
The other and my favorite one is posting at forums and placing your site URL in signature, this way you'll got a lot of links which could bring you some relevant traffic from other forums and also boost site popularity in search engines.
So feel free to update your signature in profile now so you can got few links from our site too Wink

I think the best way is to create something like an article, review, tutorial or video that could be used by your site and sites with relative content. Then make alterations in them that customize them to select sites. Once you have such content contact sites with relative content to yours and offer your customized content to them for use in their site. This gives them good relative content and you good one way back links.

Some useful ideas here but at the end of the day, people simply post simple questions to forums minus their signature to create a thread and then they include their forum signature to create a link to their site.

It's so easy to post one sentence than a big lump of informative stuff. Watch it happen here. Nicholas741 is an obvious coded name to track results of social engineering. At the time of my post this person has no signature. But wait, it will surely appear once a few threads are established.

Andy, I'm currently working on solution to disable signatures of inactive members, so if I manage to code it in efficient way such problem wouldn't be existent.
Regarding nickname of course it could be used for tracking results from other side I know people who specially have nickname from beginning which include numbers just because their name was already taken everywhere and they decide to use numbers which have meaning for them...

I read that for the very reasons you mentioned Andy Google is working on reducing the value of forum post.

There is already no value given by google to forum posts. The only value google gives is for community involvement.

For example, you have a automobile site and are a long term member of a automobile community, then your signature link from that community forum will surely help your ranking. Community involvement is not only limited to online forums but to open mailing lists and online web groups etc.

Even if Google doesn't value signatures they are still good source relevant traffic, I regularly see people coming from forums where I participate.
Also participation pays off since the more posts you got from community the more internal links are pointing to your profile which is ranked accordingly in search engines...
Also I'm agree with Manu, that mailing lists especially specialized ones are even more efficient in providing backlinks and sending more traffics than forums
