Hi, I have been asked to sell off a lot of my companies old domain names, apparently they may be worth something. Some of them are fairly good, but the way people price domain names is a little random and I'm not sure what the best way to sell them is.

I've seen lot of people start threads about their domain names and try to encourage people to bid on them, but this seems like a lot of work and that the chances of finding someone with a genuine interest is rare. I have been looking at services like Sedo and Afternic. Has anyone tried out these with any success?

Any advice gratefully received!

I never sold domain names so can't give you 100% working solution.
If you have free hand on pricing them I would try to sell them yourself without help of brokers. You may also wish to develop some yourself...
If you become Jr. Member on our forum you can post list of domains for sale on Advertising Marketplace, maybe someone of members would be interested in buying some domains.
BTW you may also try Domain Name Aftermarket, I'm used it myself and found some great domains to be sold there, I'm not sure about fees scheme although.

Try contacting similar domain name / businesses. Also their web designer may be interested if their clients are ready for an additional site.

I really don't trust the domain name after-market. My gut feel is to strongly resist ever buying any pre-registered domain and wait for it to expire. But I am probably in dream land here since any name that has been registered before will have an intrinsic value attached to it and I cannot imagine any registra letting it go completely. Like godaddy.com set up sites based on expired domains that are stuffed with Ads including Google Adsense links so the domain aftermarket is one to avoid IMHO.

So I think Johnhask's advice is best.

I agree with Andy thoughts with aftermarket. But About Godaddy, I had some couple of domain searched got few good ones. I just waited for 2 mins( maybe I went to bathroom) and when I wanted to buy the domain.. its gone ...poooof sold already.
This happen few times., so whats why goDaddy??
any thoughts?

I don't expect it is a problem with GoDaddy but more like somebody feeding the domain search data to other companies. Maybe they provide a live feed of domains being searched on to subscribers?

GoDaddy are a business so if they hold expired domain names then I don't blame them trying to make some income off them while they are being held. But if there are no bids on the names then they should be released. However there are domain name registrars that  grab these domains and never pay for them. Check this link: http://www.bobparsons.com/DomainKiting.html

So whenever I am looking for a domain name to register and find a good one, I never leave it a few days to think about it. I usually register it very soon after finding it.
