 Hi,
Does anyone understand how Google is propagating the Page Rank from the home page to other pages of a site?

I have a PR4 home page, most of the pages linked from this home page have got PR3, but some have got PR2 and even PR0, and I am not able to understand why. My internal linking system doesn't favor any pages and I haven't got more backlinks from outside on thoses pages which have PR3 compared to the PR0 or 2.

I noticed that PR is not being propagated very quickly to my new inner pages so it could be a delay problem.

Also, PR is a score based on a secret algorithm, but one of the strong factors is the link text. So the pages on your site with high PR may have very relevant link text from the home page.

Having a PR0 for my inner pages is not a problem for traffic however. The traffic to this PR0 page which is a directory off my PR6 page is 40-70 visits a day currently. Some of the traffic is from Google but I'm not sure how much since there are several referring pages.

Andy is right, many pages which got PR0 could get very good traffic and later their PR could be updated to something higher. I think that if we're talking about inner pages there are no reason to worry, just wait and one day they may got some rank. As long as your domain is ranked itself you're safe IMHO and could invest your time in building new content of the site.

While searching I suppose the importance of PR is for the home page mostly and not for inner pages I suppose, because this is a reason many PR 0 pages show up on first page of google search.

New sites have PR0 and get a temporary boost in Google, at least they did when I last created a new site and it Stuck at #1 for a few weeks. Oh, now it's back to #3  Cheesy I think it's because the owner was asking about why it slipped on forums and the posts maybe boosted it back up the Rankings LOL

I guess a new PR update should be due soon. I am fascinated what will happen with my latest site since I did many new things such as social networking, published an article and released some viral documents into the wild. Alexa rank is currently under 400,000 so the PR should, I guess be around 5  Wink

Higher PR is nice to see but influence of page ranking on SERP is almost nihil. Personally i do not care a lot about PR. What i care about is better SERP for certain keywords.
But generally spoken number of links on higher PR and similar site will help site to increase PR and give better SERP.

I guess it depends, if you mostly make money off link sales (oh, hope Matt Cutts dont see it) then you need PR. Anything from links, to blog sponsored reviews, requires PR, the bigger -- the better you get paid.
if you work with affiliate marketing or Adsense, then u need actual sales / clicks, and that means primarily traffic so optimizing your site for best SERPs is essential.

One of my sites used to be Nr 7 in Google for keywords "free ecards" and it brought huge traffic / adsense revenue, and it was much better than just having a bigger green candy bar Smiley

What i know about seo and PR of Google is that traffic is directly proportional to search engine ranking and Page rank is directly proportion to the number of back links. Google is consider back links as vote, more your site will get valued votes i mean back links will get high Page Rank.

Back links play very important role in search engine ranking in Google and other search engine.

Hi William!
Generally you're correct but there are a lot of nuances, like not all links are actually counted and not all links are counted proportionally e.g. you can have thousands of links and PR 1 or just few and PR much higher, that's why PR is bad indicator of site success it's popularity in search engines, whatever...

I for one don't pay any attention to Page Rank as it is just an indication of Googles opinion of your site based only on it's own biased searches. What I think would be a good thing would be for someone to find a way for search engines to be able to communicate with site servers and set a site's popularity via the number of visitors and page views it gets. That wouldn't be perfect but it would be better IMO.

Maybe, interesting for some people: I have removed PageRank indicators from my web browser after realizing that it is only of importance if you are marketing paid posts on a blog or another paid content medium.

This is yet another step forward to less stress and hassle in everyday life. Not that I have much of a problem in this regard but it is a tip to pass on  Wink
