Dear All,I want to run a website about information about china, like travel, culture of China, etc, so the foreigners can visit it.
I think domain with "china" is better.but I searched and I found all the good one is regisited, at last, I find china-community.com.
Do you think this domain is suitable?
china-community means community for china or community for chinese?
Or you have better suggestion?
Thanks a lot.

I would avoid registering any domain name that contains dashes. Also I would only register a .com for this purpose. This will help your site with ranking on Google. How about using a popular city name in the domain name rather than china? When I searched on travel to china there were 203 million pages. The top 10 sites were all .com and 1 .gov

You need to research your market to find a way to get found in amongst all this strong competition.

I read elsewhere that putting dashes in domain names helps Google to recognize the names you are targetting. Not true?

Just do a search and see how many domains containing dashes show up  Wink

Use your keywords. If you see a bunch of domain names with dashes in them for the top 10 domain names that you are targeting then you need to use dashes. If none of the domain names contain dashes then avoid them. But you will hit a wall where you find all the domain names are taken so you need to experiment with domain extensions and adding more keywords until you identify what combination of these gets highest ranking in the search engines.

Never ask for opinions, always do simple test searches.

although search most likely return only few domain with dashes it could also mean that domains without them were taken earlier, people who own such domains develop them well so they got good ranks.
Personally I never avoid using dashes, actually I like them, and site which gives me most profit actually have dash in domain Smiley

Also:

Additional Domains
   AREDASHESOK.COM $8.95*/yr
   AREDASHESFINE.COM $8.95*/yr
   AREDASHESNICE.COM $8.95*/yr

nice, maybe it's worth to buy both, so one with dashes would advocate them and without dashes tell how bad they are Grin

LOL - you couldn't lose with that strategy. Thank goodness underscores are not allowed in domain names  Roll Eyes

Seriously, it is becoming almost too hard to register new but useful domain names so I can share my latest tactic since I already registered the domain name  Grin

I wanted to register a domain associated with things being small so I started with micro but it was taken. Then I tried nano but again taken. But finally pico was available so I registered www.picotool.com If you want to go one dimension smaller I think Femto is the next progression on this theme.  Roll Eyes

From my time in the mobile phone industry I remember the term "pico nets" becoming prevailent as in very small area coverage of mobile phone networks. So consider using "pico" in your domain names.
