I have a problem with my DVD writer: I can read CDs and DVDs, write CDs, but since some time, I cannot write anymore DVD.

Does anyone know what I should do?

If you are running windows it may be caused by a DRM (Digital Rights Management) software update. This would manifest itself if you are burning video or audio rather than data. Burning your own data shouldn't be a problem. If it is then the drivers may have changed in some way.

Another problem may be that you purchased some DVD recordable discs that are not compatible with your burner or there was some failiure of the DVD-burning laser or even dirt/dust affecting the focus of the beam. just thinking off the top of my head.

Andy is right, there are number of factors which may cause this problem, can you tell what's reporting your burning software? As it may give us some tips about what's wrong.
But since you tell that you not able to write disk now and was able in the past I'm guessing that it could be sort of problem with laser...

Sorry for not answering earlier, my wife delivered a baby last week, and this kept me busy.

Here is what is happening: when I insert the DVD, I see it as drive D, but when I look at the properties of this drive, the disk appear all blue, and the free space is 0, as well as the used space.

Hi, Beamup! do you occasionally have NEC burner? As I had NEC(can't remember exact model) which wasn't able to read and write CDs from beginning but worked with DVDs very well. I didn't find a way to solve the problem, firmware upgrades doesn't change anything...

I would just like to add that my DVD burner stopped burning discs. The software didn't seem to indicate any problem but after I changed the DVD burner unit it was working again. I actually changed back to an old DVD burner that I kept from my old computer. I think it is a Mitsumi unit. The failed one was a Sony dual layer unit.

I don't recommend Sony products. They are trendy so that should explain a lot!

Sony branded it's name very well so many people know it and simply buy their products because of this. I know that they had well made products before but computer equipment aren't get good feedback.
BTW how long Sony burner worked for you?
