I diagnosed the cause of my windows explorer crashing with memory access errors. It was a stubborn association of Real Player with AVI files. I thought I had specified that AVI files should only be opened by Windows Media Player but I noticed the Real Player Icon lingering on the AVI files in Windows Explorer file lists shortly before the protection mechanism kicked in.

To get rid of this problem I went to the command prompt and renamed the problem files with rename *.avi *.avv which is not an ideal solution but at least it stops Real Player associating itself with these files.

The problem files were on my D: drive and I have seen this problem surfacing before and it went away so I forgot about it. btw, I am one of the crazy people that purchased the pro version of Real Player so maybe the free version doesn't have this problem?

Real Player is a major pain in the a** and has too many problems, such as you mentioned.

Try this free alternative: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Real_Alternative.htm
