Acer was rumored to be not best company and was long avoided in our country, at least it was so in the past. Personally I have CompactFlash card from them and it's working many years without any issues, also there are no rumors about bad make quality anymore so guess they change it for better. Most of my friends own either Toshiba(not recommend it) or Acer and I didn't hear bad feedback from those owning Acer, although I don't even sure what models they had Undecided
Actually I've just answered to tell that I'm trust in Compaq quality as all devices produced by this company I've saw and later those manufactured by HP was working well for many years so maybe check this brand too?

I've had Compaq in the past and have not been pleased due to the proprietary issues with it and the quality has not been all that great. I've heard bad things about HP except for the top line computers.

it's features sounds really tasty to my ears! And I assume that you can get it cheaper than Dell one you've mentioned earlier?

Actually it is a little more but it has a better processor and 17 inch (43.18 cm) vice a 14 inch (35.56 cm) display, plus it has a full keyboard including a number pad. Just to name a few good qualities.

The spec sounds good. The CrystalBrite Technology for the display will make movie playback really good.

Personally I chose a 15.4" wide screen for my laptop (over a year ago now) since I didn't like the huge size of 17" laptops. So maybe think about the physical size of this laptop to make sure you would be happy with it?

In the picture it looks great but I would try and get hold of a physical 17" laptop and try it for size in a store before purchase. It probably doesn't matter what make you check out for this kind of test.

p.s. If you are planning to run Linux consider the supported screen resolution. I found my widescreen resolution wasn't supported at the time I tried it.

Good point here, I never liked big notebooks as well, as first of all it's portable device in my opinion and therefore shouldn't take much space during traveling. But from other side 17" could be salvation for people with poor sight.

Since it have Nvidia chip on board there should be no problems with drivers and you can choose any resolutions without tweaking in console, just like you normally do it in Windows OS.

BTW Andy, can you remind what model you have and how do you rate it?

I have a Fujitsu/Siemens Amilo LM1310G - I like everything about it apart from it feels slow compared to my desktop so I only use it when travelling. I think the slowness is due to the shared graphics memory or maybe a slow hard drive.

I don't plan to carry my laptop around much and when I do I plan on having plenty of room for it and power for it also. However from my research it seems as though that laptop is very good on battery usage to the point that even with the large screen it's battery is reported to last longer than other Acers with smaller screens, like 2.5 hours vice 2 hours of DVD movie watching.

This reminds me of a tip. If you are going to be mostly powering it from an adaptor, remove the battery. This saves some weight and may preserve the battery life since it's possible to get unwanted charging taking place as you move the laptop around the house with just a few minutes of discharge occuring each time.

But the battery is a handy way to guard against mains outages.

Also, it is a good idea to occasionally run off battery power alone to cycle the battery if you leave it fitted.

Some computers in the past would not run without the battery installed.

That is true  Grin I am assuming you are referring to the memory retention cell for the bios.
