Has anyone ever tried Quanta Plus? If so what can you tell me about it?

I just downloaded Quanta Plus and my first impression is that it is great but it will take a lot of testing to insure it makes pages without messing them up as a lot of other WYSIWYG editors. Of course I don't really  think it is a true WYSIWYG editor as you can't (as far as I know) just drag and drop but it is an HTML editor with great helpers and previews. I tried to get a copy for Windows as online it says there is one and I downloaded it but it looks like it is for Debian Linux and not Windows and I could not find an install or setup file.

You can get it from.....

Unless you want to have alot of tables in your code I wouldn't expect WYSIWYG. Using CSS positioning as you know produces cleaner code but tends to be WYSInotWYG  Grin

Seems like they need alot of donations to keep afloat. I don't know why they don't simply charge a few dollars for the software considering all the effort that goes into it  Huh

Quanta Plus in preview mode shows changes in CSS as you make them making it a WYSIWYG editor for CSS but you can't drag and drop. I have not found anything added by Quanta Plus that it was not told to place there yet.

That's the advantage of OpenSource. The software is created for desire to show ability and quality, not for profit.

So are all the programmers university boffins and students? I guess some do it for a hobby too? But, personally I wouldn't like to code as part of a team unless I had control over a major functional part of the code or I was a beginner looking for some tuition from experienced coders.

I had to look up boffins and the definition said "a scientist or technician engaged in military research" and I suspect you are using it to mean scientist or technician working at a university. I don't know about all of the OpenSource programmers but from what I know they do all have some personality traits in common. The main thing I see is that they are people that have a strong desire for peer support, a drive to succeed, and are a bit of a anarchist. Consider this and add that the ones that are programmers also have programming in common. With this in mind it is a little easier to see a group of these people joining together and working on like projects with quite a lot of drive and desire to produce quality programs (even if it is only a part of a larger project) so they can be held in high esteem by others that are like themselves. The OpenSource program is not their aim but just a side effect that is good for those of us that are different from them.

I have to say that it sounds to me from that statement that you are not really not much of a team player but have a strong desire to control. Smiley

Yes, I suspect that there are many more programmers out there like me that don't like developing software as part of a team. For example, the one's that advertise their services at places like RentaCoder.com or people like Peter Norton. I want a high level of control over my code but welcome input from reviewers that can suggest improvements or additions. I have worked in teams before but usually it was as team leader, principal engineer or a newbie learning from the experts.
