Hello everyone,

I'm new around here, please excuse any cultural missteps.

I have a new problem, and I can't find a solution, so I'm looking for more help.

The webhost for a client installed mssql, and we need mysql.  Running both on the same machine sounds like a disaster, but I can't document a case for or against.

How easy is it to remove mssql and replace it with mysql?  Has anyone had any problems with this?

Thanks,
Jim

Hi JSB and welcome to the forums!

I have not personally ran or operated a mssql database so i'm not sure, but other members here may know.

Do you need both types of databases or just mysql? I googled the issue and there are ways to have both but it seems like it has problems.

If you do need the mysql and not the mssql and your host will can't/won't add mysql it may be easier to move to a host that does.
I think MSSQL is mostly run on windows servers and Mysql databases on linux servers.

Hello White Wolf and thanks for the quick reply.

I wasn't able to find much on running both servers on the same machine.  Clearly, you are the google-master.  Can you point me at what you found?  Just your search string would probably be enough.

This situation is a problem-child.  I've been sub-contracted to install a shopping cart.  The server is windows, running IIS, and mssql was installed.  The client wants oscommerce.  We're playing a game of what does not go with the other things.

If we can get mysql running quickly enough on the server, that solves my problem and the project manager can talk with the client about better long term solutions (can you say "LAMP server", I knew you could).  But it's not my client, not my server, and other than the shopping cart, not my problem.  The goal at the moment is to get something working for the client so they are making money.

here is the search string http://www.google.com/search?q=mysql+and+mssql+on+same+server&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=ie7&rlz=1I7GGLJ

There is a few people asking the same thing and most articles say it is possable if it's on a windows server.  Have you cotacted the Hosting company and ask them?

Hope this helps at least.

here is another article http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/windows-start-service.html

and here is a few posts i have found on the issue

MySQL, and SQL Server are nothing more than..... 'computer programs'
that manage file systems. Just like Microsloth Office is a program (or
set of them) for managing documents.

So if you're asking if you can have more than one program on your
machine, the answer's yes. (Yep it really is that simple, just install
mysql into it's own directory, not into your sql server directory).

You can most certainly run MySQL and MSSQL on a single server if it was a Microsoft server as MySQL is MS compliant out of the box (as is MSSQL - obviously).

However, running MS SQL and MySQL on a linux server is ALOT more difficult, as MS SQL does not play nice with Linux

Thanks more, White Wolf,

I have been in touch with the web host, but they are not impressing me with their ability, their documentation about their servers, or their ability to determine problems or solutions.

While it's true, as the author of one of your quotes says, that both mssql and mysql are just programs and we can run more than one program on a computer, both are servers, and want to configure computer operational parameters to their own benefit, and take charge of certain types of computer requests.  And they don't do any of this the same way.

Thanks for the search help.  I'll dig into the search results and see if there are problems I should anticipate.

Your web hosts probably don't want the extra workload in supporting another complex software product. The Admins may have only been trained in MicroSoft support so may know next to nothing about open source software. Like White Wolf hinted, web servers are usually set up for Windows hosting or Linux-based hosting, not usually a mixture.

The only issue I see with clashes between 2 database servers is if they use the same port, if they do use ports that is. Like http is on port 80 so only one web server can work at a time. I'm not sure if one web server can connect to 2 or more database servers.
