Open Notepad and enter the following text:

start explorer.exe ftp://username:password@ftp.yoursite.com

But replace the 3 parameters I have shown with your particular hosting values.

Then save the file as ftplogon.bat or whatever .bat you like to a convenient folder on your disk. Remember, it contains sensitive info. so you want to keep it private.

Then make a DeskTop shortcut to this "batch" file. When you click on it, it should open up the Windows file explorer and connect via FTP to your web hosting.

Then you can drag and drop files between a normal file explorer window and this one  Grin

It's cool eh?

If you cut and paste urls into the windows explorer on the desktop it tends to use your default browser e.g FireFox. And I don't think Firefox supports FTP file transfers unless you maybe install some plugins.

From the windows command line i.e. after you went run>CMD you can enter ftp as a command and get connected but it is all command line stuff.

For information: if you want to start Internet Explorer from a command line you call it "IEXPLORE.EXE" but windows explorer is "EXPLORER.EXE" subtle difference huh? The way I found this out was to do a CTRL+ALT+DEL to see the running apps, then right click on the app in the list and select to go to the process. Then you get to see what the process is called.

Connected to ftp using windows explorer for the first time. I knew it can be done but didn't knew how to do that. Looks pretty cool.
Also, I have firefox as my default browser but I was able to download and upload through windows explorer. It didn't used it at all for file transfers and opened files in IE.
Thanks again.

Andy where you were in times I was on Windows? Smiley I always forget format of this string when I need it and couldn't find it quickly or have only FTP access and no internet to search for right format.
Now I'm finally get used to this format and don't forget it anymore as using it frequently in various applications.
I'm sure it would be handy for folks who doesn't have FTP client at their hand and need quickly access some server.

I never forget Svetlana's tip for minimizing all the windows via the Windows key + D

This has saved me so much time, I want to give her a big hug if we ever meet offline  Smiley
