I've read here and there that maybe being #1 for a keyword on PPC isn't the best all the time, but I've heard no explaination as to why? Anyone care to share?

There are several theories for this and nothing has been proven as to the reason.

One theory is that people know that PPC is paid advertising and if you have the top spot you paid the most. This gives the allusion that there could be something wrong with the ad, the company placing that ad is only interested in money and not he customer and so on.

BTW, this is actaully the same for organic/natural search. Most users don't click on the top spot.

I can go along with what Hope said about the number one spot. When I first started surfing the web and using search engines, it didn't take long to realize that the sponsored results, or top position, did not have that much relevancy to my search; so I, by habit, began ignoring the top result. I think search engines have conditioned surfers to expect irrelevant results in the top position, so many just ignore it.

I loved the useless Amazon results box that Ask Jeeves and some others used years ago. No matter what you typed in for a search, you could always find it at Amazon when the results were returned. You'll still get that in the sidebar sponsored results.

Google has the same problem with eBay. Now I know eBay sells all kinds of things, but it is just insane.

My experience is people click on the #1 link, but always followup by clicking the #2 or 3 links just to compare.

I think the best and relevant title goes a long way than the number one spot provided you are only a few spots down.

That is exactly right IMHO. The search started with some keywords and if the user sees these highlighted in the title text of any page near the top of the list then they are going to be drawn to it.
