Inspired by this forum and another site using this Yabbse script I decided to use it on un-related sites.

My question is how to make it look like part of your site?

Otherwise, I fear the visitors may become hooked on the forums and never see your website!

Hi Andy, I've move your post to this board as it's wasn't related to previous one... BTW what kind of optimization you're talking about? can you give more details? as for me I plan to integrate my board to other parts of the site...
BTW check out http://www.mtrcom.net as Islanding integrated board into his site... also check out main site of YaBB SE itself as they also integrate forum in some way...

Then do a tutorial for yabb pl.  This one is supposed to be more user friendly, at least in the setup anyway.

When talking about customization are you referring to editing the template?

A tutorial on how to install would be an asset right now...   Cheesy

I was wondering what can be changed and how. I can probably work it out anyway.

I'ts easy to install Yabbse.

1. Download the latest version from www.yabbse.org
2. Make a directory on your site e.g. forum
3. Set the access properties of the directory to CHMOD 777
4. Upload the .ya and install.php files to your site.
5. Open yoursite.com/install.php in your web browser.
6. Follow the instructions.
7. Delete the .ya and install.php files.
8. Set the access properties of the directory to CHMOD 655
That's it.

p.s. You need to know the name and password for your mySQL database.

yup I would agree that YaBB SE is much easier to install... after installation you're ready to go... main tool for changing look of YaBB would be template.php which is also accessible from Admin menu... you can change it manually or copy it e.g. to Dreamweaver to understand better which thing correspond and for which thing...
if you want to change buttons or other things you can just upload your pictures instead of ones supported with installation.
I don't exactly understand what kind of customatization you need so don't know what to suggest you...
also you can built in your board into your current design using SSI module which come with installation.
Andy, maybe you can give me example of what would you like to see as a result of your work and probably I be able to tell you how to accomplish this.

OK Phoenix,

I'm back online, my site looks like this http://www.readingfreeads.co.uk so I want my forum to look as close as this as possible.

There are no ads yet since it is a duplication of my wiped freeads site at wokinghamfreeads.co.uk

I worked hard today to get my site pages working so I have spent minimal time on the forum.

Can you post more info on the CHMOD settings?

p.s. I previously installed phpbb , another good free forum script.

At least I can relax at work tomorrow and get the automated income  Wink

Just noticed that Matt is asking for advice on yabb pl, I assume this is the perl version.

I don't use perl anymore since it requires the cgi-bin. I only use php nowadays.

Maybe someone else can help.

Andy, glad to hear your site back online... as for http://www.readingfreeads.co.uk I don't sure it YaBB based...  but if you want to your site in similar way you can use SSI.php or maybe it would be easier for you to use some portal like http://www.ttcms.com/
as for CHMOD what more you need to know? as all settings are listed in readme.html which come with installation... here is permission info taken from this file:

6) Open your browser and in the address bar type: e.g. 'http://www.domainexample.net/yabbse/install.php'
7) Follow the on-screen steps, double check that you've provided correct information.
Cool When you've completed the installation and your board is running, Delete the Install Files. (Refer to step 5)

Hi Matt, I've didn't saw your post first time...

Thanks for the setup info...  and is enough for me to download the se version instead.   Cheesy

Still wondering what a chmod is though and assume that the directory 777 is just a folder name that other files are placed in.  Is this a correct assumption?

Looks as though I do not have mysql enabled yet, just learning all I can before I do set up.

Also have you ever used the installer for either yabb or invision board?  And do you think one should?

usually 777 is used for directory in which forum will be installed, so you're correct. as for installer I've try it for YaBB but I don't like it... I prefer to upload everything myself in old fashion way...

For the benefit of newbies, I'd like to say that to install any BB script you normally need a database such as mySQL.

mySQL needs to be installed onto the server and configured by the admin.

Then the BB script will run code in PHP or Perl which, again needs to have been installed by the server admin.

All this stuff is free, so you can download it to a PC and set it up and play before taking it to the web.

I recommend these 3 items in order of install if you want to learn:
xitami - web server
php - scripting language
mysql - database
bb's - yabbse or phpbb

These are all free and fairly easy to install and setup. Or, should I say "as easy as it gets"  Grin

Maybe it's not so easy, I just worked hard to learn it and read some books??? But all easier than coding in c++ for instance.

My fav "budget" host is now supanames.co.uk if you're interested and want these features.

You say you can play with it before up loaded?  I may have understood...  But I have all that is required on my puter now... php and mysql...
