I don't know necessarily what the defined limits are (or if there necessarily are any), but if you do a Google seach you will see that they will display the results as a maximum of around 65 characters of the title tag and 150 characters of the description tag. Though either tag can be longer, that is the maximum they will display. I generally use a guideline of 20 keywords maximum my self, though I have seen estimates up to 50 (I would rather add 50 words to the page content rather than trying come up with 50 words for the tag which may well be ignored).

If you use the META Tag Analyzer tool from Scrub The Web, link below
http://www.scrubtheweb.com/abs/meta-check.html

to test the meta tags used on your site. Such a test will tell you the size you can use, to make your tags spider/bot friendly, for each tag along with other things.

Links and accurate information provide the best answer, while garbage in provides garbage out.

Tish, it may vary from directory to directory and in different search engines it would differ as well, so I would try to keep it as short as possible. BTW I think that numbers suggested by Manu would be reasonable to choose as default.

www.w3.org provide recommendations for web standards. They publish specifications for all kinds of web documents. However, not all companies adhere to the recommendations. The description tag is the longest common one I can think of. Databases tend to store small pieces of text as VARCHAR which can be up to 255 characters long. This would be my guess for the maximum length of description text.

Thanks for the info tiwari. I have always been wondering if my meta tags were too long.
