On the web you will find tons of "information" about how to get high search engine rankings.

If you have any "secret" information, here is the place to share it for major kudos!

I'll kick it off with this top secret technique:

The secret is to avoid hiding your domain registration details. You may have done this to avoid spam bots logging your details and adding your details to a database to distribute around the globe for the purpose of emailing you daily with offers. But Google checks your whois info to check the age of your site as a ranking factor. So if you deny access to this information it is a negative ranking factor.

Lesson: Don't annoy the bot!  Grin

Google became an ICCAN registrar, not to sell domains but to improve the search results using the whois info and it could be possible that they can see behind private registrations. Matt Cutts from Google at PubCon did a little show where he showed some signs that Google can see the data behind the whois protection. I wonder if every ICAAN registrar can see the data behind whois protection.

I would rather not have to pay for whois protection since it is like the street-level protection that some shop owners are forced to pay for.

Andy, what do you mean by this? As I think that hiding whois could actually be evidence of fraud and shop owners should rather avoid hiding these details...

street-level protection
I was referring to offline protection rackets. So this payment scheme may be moving online.
