Do you have a microphone plugged into your PC ?
I've just ordered a C01U - USB studio condenser microphone to see if i can make some good sound recordings. I went for this mike because it plugs in to the USB slot and sould be a lot better than the standard PC microphone. I'm also going to give cubase (got it cheap) or fruit loops a go and see what it's like. Has anyone else tried this ?

Nooner, I am getting into using a real microphone into the computer and it's a lot better. I haven't worked on my project lately because I wanted to use a certtain mic and I could not find a minimiizing adapter altough I know I have several! I just bought one yesterday and am going to spend some time working with it and will post an mp3 of my results. Wink

I didn't record anything from microphone for ages but in the past I've tried adapting usual microphone to jack which would fit into PC and it works much cleaner than one sold for PC. Don't know about USB ones but I assume that if size of microphone itself and membrane wouldn't be so small as on PC's microphone it would produce better results.

id like to get a mic myself but ive never got around to it
im not certain but wouldnt the usb mic use up more resources and make the pc struggle if recording in realtime over a audio track?
i think id go with a normal jack plug when i get around to buying one
ive used cubase, acid, soundforge and quite a few other progs but i mainly use hardware synths

is it for writing music?
cubase is pretty good as theres lots of virtual instruments you can get and its pretty easy to use once its all set up but i prefer using sonic foundry`s acid for audio arrangment and soundforge for editing audio and adding effects but its more sample based but you can use midi but ive never bothered, instead ive just done the arrangments in cubase and recorded it into soundforge

if you need any help give me a shout

I had to put Service Pack 2 (SP2) in to get the microphone working, but it's much better that i ever thought. It can pick up sounds in the next room and i'm very happy with it. I do have to wait and listen before recording anything though, so as not to pick up the background sounds. I'll have to work out how to filter the recordings.

BTW carpmad, yes it's for trying to make my own music. I've also just bought an Evolution MK 149 Keyboard & Midi Cable. I'm not sure how good that will be, but it should work with cubase.

ive seen them but not used it i think there pretty good though as they advertise in pro music mags it will do exacley what you want through cubase

you can filter it by removing certain frequencys in the area the noise is or if your not singing just cut it out with a audio editor

what sort of music will you be doing?

Microphone has become a necessity these days especially if you are a regular user of Skype or any other calling systems . And if you are playing games like CSS online then its a must for playing .

Digital interfacing to the PC should be the best way to go via USB probably. Then you need to choose a professional box that interfaces between a PC and a studio MIC. The best MICs are powered so they have a pre-amp in the head of the MIC and the MIC is a large unit with wind attenuation via some kind of shield over it.
