Australian environmentalist and television personality Steve Irwin has died during a diving accident. Mr Irwin, 44, was killed by a stingray barb to the chest while he was filming an underwater documentary in Queensland's Great Barrier Reef.
 Angry
I thought he was an idiot and would get hurt sooner or later. Didn't think he would get killed by a stringray though.
RIP Steve.

This was probably less dangerous than most of the other stuff he's done, but he was just unlucky that the stingray got him in the heart. His wife and 2 young children are now fatherless.

He was a great boost to tourism Australia. He lived not that far from me, on the Sunshine Coast. I watched the little old, Croc Park, grow into a booming tourist park, Australia Zoo.
When he was on the coast, (not often, as he was shooting doco's and travelling a lot) you would see him riding around the park on his motorbike, he would always have a 'giday', 'smile' and a 'wave' for the tourists.
The Zoo Carpark is full of media vans. People around here are in total shock. Deepest sympathy to his wife, Terry and children, Bindi and Bob.

We will never find another Steve, RIP Wildlife Warrior, you will be sadly missed.

He took a lot of risks, but he knew what he was doing. It sounds like this was a freak accident. Sting Ray do not normally attack humans. They say there have only been 16 sting ray related deaths in the lasts 10 years.

He was a great educator and environmentalist. He did a lot for Australia and the world. He was a big favorite among children here in the states. I was never a big fan, but had watched him on occassion.

LIke race car drivers, seems he was always living on the edge.   But I really enjoyed the programs he produced.

It is a great loss to his family, Australia, and viewers everywhere.    Especially kids who loved him!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I can't clearly recall where I read it, but recently read that Steve Irwin,  http://www.crocodilehunter.com/australia_zoo/press_releases/2005/basic_instinct.htm
hired a big boat here and sent it to the area, filled  up with food basically/mainly for the elephants, becaseu they were helping out so much with the tsunami by moving, shifting, lifting and shoving incredulously heavy articles and rubble around but had hardly any feed, so Steve Irwin, wanting to assist as much as possible in the tsunami did this wonderful deed.
NOW I  like him, before that, for same unknown reason, I could take or leave....now I have respect!

You can of course each have an opinion of someone.....I saw the accident as one that was not in a "controlled" situation as were many of the previous ones, especially with the crocs he had grown up around......He put his money where his mouth was and poured it all back into conservation and trying to help animals (similar to the ones I tried to help with the  beautiful endangered snow leopards) that was his only aim in this life.

This was really tragic. It's sad to see someone so passionate and sincere (and most importantly, productive) comes to the end of their life in this way. I found him annoying sometimes, but I will definitely miss him. His ideas are still alive.
