As I only use PCs I can only comment on them. There is so much support, hardware, software and freeware for the personal computer, its had to go past them.
Macs are getting better and better but still a limited range of the above exists.
Personally, I would go PC but talk to people with Macs before you decide. Get as much advice as you can. Its a big decision Smiley
I have a friend who uses Mac and he wouldnt use anything else.

Hi Lawman, I should tell that doesn't have experience with Macintosh either and my knowledge is based on what I'm reading and hear from people who use them.
Macs traditionally was always more advanced with graphics and video works than PCs, compiling should work more superior on them as well. But from what I know with games things aren't so good there as most of games are still made for MS Windows and only some ported to Mac.

If you interested in all 3 tasks let me suggest you trying Linux as your OS, as you can use it on PC and Macs as well, and although Linux still not able to run every program written for Windows most of popular games could be run under it.

I, as well, do not have any mac experience, other than to know that the parts used in a Mac/Apple, are quite different from that of a pc.  Not sure yet, as to availability to new parts or upgrades. Would have to ask sales rep or check on the web, for access to parts, repairs, upgradeability, etc.  Other than this, I would think you would have to try one out to see if you like it.  But would suggest, as Dennis suggested, trying out linux to see what you think, before buying.
Found this site...  http://www.whylinuxisbetter.net/, in which basically goes into a few reasons why one should switch to linux.
Maybe let us know, what you decide and how it's going, with what you have decided.

I'm not sure if Mac still as superior as it was before, because of new collaboration with Intel which now ship CPU for Macintosh, I've read complains from Mac fans about this as original G series processors were better. BTW here is news about Intel on their site: http://www.apple.com/intel/

BTW Matt, you've find good site http://www.whylinuxisbetter.net/ it's well worded reasons why to switch to Linux OS!

Graphics and gaming are also my main focus.

Being an arts/computer student, I use Macs all of the time. At school, it's mandatory... Infact, most media art colleges use Macs for the majority of their student needs these days.

I can tell you from personal experience that I prefer PCs. It may be a matter of personal preference, but I do not like the way Macs operate... And I have found it just as efficient to use PCs for the same tasks.
